Jim Strawbridge Posted 21 September , 2023 Author Share Posted 21 September , 2023 Thank you, Charlie. A direct message re Hazebrouck sent direct. A name (Louise Irma Leonie Degroote) on the war memorial there required. I seem to have all of my requirements for St. Omer except for a French female casualty who I know is buried there but do not know which cemetery. Possibly a civilian one. Jim Strawbridge Posted 2 November , 2023 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2023 Thank you, Wayne. I have taken her into my database. I wouldn't normally take one that died ten years after the war end but the headstone implies that her death, either mentally or physically, was due to the War. Thank you for thinking of my project when you spotted it.

PRC Posted 18 November , 2023 Share Posted 18 November , 2023 Jim, Can't remember if I've shared this with you previously, but I've recently had cause to post on the forum some images of the War Memorials in the Church of St Mary's, Ditchingham, Norfolk. While there are no women remembered on the main carved memorial, hanging nearby is a parchment listing the fallen of the Great War. The last name is that of a nurse, Mary A. Rodwell, who drowned in the sinking of the Hospital Ship Anglia. Staff Nurse Mary Rodwell, of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, has no known grave and is remembered on the Hollybrook Memorial. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2895076/mary-rodwell/ I don't remember seeing any reference to her on any headstones in the churchyard. Her service record shows the Balance of her Pay and her War Gratuity was claimed and issued to her father John Rodwell, Esquire, of Ditchingham, Bungay, Suffolk - Ditchingham and Bungay are on either side of the Norfolk\Suffolk county line and Bungay would have been the postal town. At various points in that record he is recorded as living on Parnow Street \ Parnon Road, (there were variations at the time including Parnhaugh, but currently it is Pirnhow Street). Looks like she was living at Upper Norwood, Surrey, in the run up to being accepted for service and posted and her father was actually farming near Lewes, Sussex. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10799989 Cheers, Peter
Jim Strawbridge Posted 19 November , 2023 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2023 (edited) Thank you, Peter. That is one that I did not know about. She is remembered in quite a few places. I know about the Hollybrook Memorial, the Royal Garrison Church, Aldershot, a plaque in Hendon Hospital, Plumpton Green War Memorial and now this one. Thank you. The one at Plumpton Green I have yet to work out the connection. Edited 19 November , 2023 by Jim Strawbridge
