Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could drink you under the table.

From the Monty Python song.

Absolutely....knowing that is certainly a sign of age now :D

 My man's surname is now famous, despite being supplanted;

Is he Ralph Van Deman, “the father of American military intelligence” (yes, another one)? My thinking takes me to Van Dieman’s Land, the supplanted name of Tasmania.

That is absolutely excellent deductive logic mon oncle. Wrong but brilliant. My man has the most expensive tin can in history named after him, he made major but didn't really have much call for his specialism in the military.

I am reminded of the surgeon who said, “The operation was a complete success but the patient died”.

As for the most expensive tin can, Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ went for $11 million.

It is not Andy Warhol. This tin can had an initial budget of $36 million I believe, but must have cost way more than that since then.

Going to go ‘left field’ with this and suggest that the tin can is about rocket development and the US space programme. In which case this chap could be Richard H Goddard who invented the liquid fuel rocket system which was based on his work during WW1. He was tasked by the US Army and Navy to develop rocket systems for use by the military. This led to the creation of the bazooka and later the technology was incorporated into the Gemini and Apollo projects.

Am I shooting the moon with this line of thought or have I just crashed and burned?

......and left "sitting in my tin can"

Dear Major Tom, you are getting warmer. The tin can in question is unmanned, has a lid but was regularly visited for maintenance. Goddard is fascinating when you look, incorrect, but fascinating. To be honest the wrong answers are going to be more interesting that the correct one.

Pete.

OK. From the sublime to the ridiculous....are we taking about for want of a better word kitchenware as in the US Army's 'Taylor Rolling Kitchen' equiped with large cans with lids. Or am I just stirring the wrong pot again

Would Major(Edwin) Hubble be having telescope trouble😁

Absolutely correct Mr K. This is the tin can in question.....

Both images of the man and his can from Wikipedia. I'm almost sad that it has been identified; the wrong answers were cracking and very educational. Wrong tree barking up of the highest order in my not so humble (or hubble) opinion...

Pete.

I've no idea who he is, though I did come across Hubble's telescope on my travels, but I now have a reasonably in depth knowledge of the ISS and it's history 😁

Ah simultaneous postings and all that. Well done John, and congratulations on your post Pete. Award yourselves a Milky Way.

Sorry to hear that matey, and obviously not a problem. Some of the wrong guesses were excellent and apart from advancing my knowledge of many aspects of the Great War they provided a load of possible future candidates for the thread.

Hope you are feeling better,

Pete.

@Fattyowlsgood clues you had me all over the place with this one. Well done @Knottyfor seeing the way to the stars

Lateral thinking of the highest order Mr IR, I almost felt churlish saying they were wrong. Almost. The Bowie quote was the icing on the cake for me.....

No this chap didn't win any medals for bravery but received accolades during his pre-war career

Oh dear, well take it easy. Reminds me of the day I had my vasectomy. Driving home some idiot pulled out in front of and I ended up with a slightly buckled bonnet on my old Rover 2000 T.C. When I got home I had the bright idea of climbing up onto said bonnet to straighten it with a little jump, slipped, did the splits, and burst the stitches on my right hand gonad. Couldn't face the thought of going back to hospital, so employed some frozen peas, needle and thread, and with my debut effort at needlework effected some sort of repair.

Photographs of my handiwork available upon request.

Anyway, I hope that cheered you up 😁
