Aubrey Herbert?

Alas No, Jane-I thought this one would be easy.   Our man served with the 16th in 16  but was chucked out in 15 because he was 15.  Hope that makes things clear......

[PS - As you have been absent a lot from GWF -or so it seems-then I hope COVID has been keeping you busy professionally- with my personal and profound gratitude for all involved in the health system side of things-a fantastic job.]

[Merci du compliment, but it is my colleagues in INM and the RNMS who have been doing the heavy listing/testing/vaccinating. My only task has been to keep out of the way of the bloody thing.]

    They also serve who only..........

The whole system has worked. You are part of all those dreary hours, weeks, months, years of preparation. Your hard work of past years- and that of you colleagues has helped keep me and a lot of others safe.   Merci beaucoup!!

Our man might be in this lovely picture taken at Cambrai in 1917-  May help identify his unit

Oh, alright- lets make this dead easy - these are pioneers of the 16th Royal Irish Rifles (2nd Down)

No idea who this is.

But the previous WIT is Thomas Shaw, the last known Irish veteran of the Great War

He enlisted underage and served in France, where he was recognized as under-age by a military policeman-  the policeman was his elder brother. He enlisted again and served through most of the battles of the RIR on the Western Front.  As to the clues- the pic. of T.E.Lawrence was also the pic of T.E.Shaw=same name.  The Savoy cabbage-he lived at a place called Savoy in Co.Down in his last years.

Good clues! Sorry I didn't have the least idea which direction to take them...

Any takers for my officer?

Is it the maritime air ace Oberleutnant Friedrich Kristiansen of Zeebrugge? https://enacademic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/5392874

I take it he’s a submariner?

I recognise him from my files, and upon checking I find he has appeared before.

You're correct, but I see that @Gunner Hall has got there. Well done GH!

Apart from the bloke that did for the Abukir, Hogue and Cressy,  Pastor N,  is the only Great War Uboot commander I recognise.  Lucky really.

Yes indeed - I really should’ve got this one, having posted him myself a while ago.

The Scottish Nationalists have been in the news lately. How interesting it all is. Anyway, moving on: this chap was something of a Renaissance man. A polymath, if you will. But who is he ? ? ?

Is it me or does he have a passing resemblance to the late Frank Bough?

Nah. He’s more of a Brough Scott.

I'm going to be more than usually insufferable,  and say I know who this is.....

But, I'm looking forward to some top class clues by UG.  (No clues here, BTW)
