The Times

I can't find an obituary for either of the above, Pettsy.

The Times generally only carried obituaries for the "Great and the Good", so unless the stories were particularly topical, even the middle-classes would not really get a mention unless in the short paid for obituary sections.

Steve.

Thank you for looking Steve, ;)

I thought Kinner might have as he was mentioned in the local paper in Chelsea by the then Prime Minister.

Looking at your other men, only one is picked up by the online Search:

Pioneer A W Munn shows up in the Times of 8-10-1915 as Died of Wounds.

The others may well be there (at least those prior to the end of 1917)but the Search is more unreliable than the London Gazette!

Steve.

Hi Steve, :)

Thank you for looking for the Munn brothers.

If I give you my e mail address you you scan over piece on A W MUNN please so I can copy it and show my father.

Thank you.

Steve,

Wonder if you might be able to assist me with a RB officer. 2nd Lieut. John Whiteley Mallinson, 6th Battalion, Killed in Action on 14/2/16 I believe attached to the MGC but not 100% on this.

The Rifle Brigade Appendix to the WW1 History has him down as M.I.D. but no date and I cannot seem to find him in the Gazette (nothing new there) and is there anything in the Times on him.

Any assistance you might be able to render here would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Andy

Hello,

Can you check to see if there is any mention in the Wounded lists for-

1102 Sergeant John D Williams, Durham Light Infantry

He was wounded [lost a leg] at the 2nd Ypres in 1915, his service papers have not survived, so I am hoping that maybe he appears in a list and that might help to narrow the date down a bit.

Many thanks,

Stewart

Can I ask if one Cecil de Pree has a Times obit. or any references?

I think he ended as Lt. Col. 8th Labour btn but I do not have dates.

Many thanks.

Sorry, folks.

There will have to be a (hopefully) short intermission on the Times look-ups while I cross all available parts of my anatomy whilst my home computer has jumper leads attached to it by the Techie people.

From the quick search I can get away with here, I can't see J D Williams.

Nor any of the Delf's, I'm afraid.

Ok, short one for Lt Col de Pree.

DEATHS.

DE PREE - On 10th Feb, 1946 at a nursing home in Edinburgh, Lt-Col. CECIL GEORGE DE PREE, late of 15th King's Hussars, and of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, of Beech Hill, Haddington, East Lothian.

There is a full one on Major-General Hugo de Pree, d. 30-3-1943, possibly related?

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Could you please look up for me,Captain Daniel Edgar Hickey,Tank Corps.

I already have his LG annoucements for the war,its post war upto his death that I'm looking for.

Captain Hickey was the author of Rolling into Action(pub 1936),his memoirs as a section commander in the T.C.,he also I believe made some radio broadcasts of his wartime experiences, this was sometime in the early to mid 30s.

I believe he may have lived into the 1990s.

Anything you have will a great help.

Many thanks.

Stuart

Paul,

I'd be very grateful if you would be kind enough to search for three men who were killed on 25 April 1915 in the landing at Sedh-el-Bahr/V Beach, Gallipoli.

They are Lt. Col. Richard Alexander Rooth, C.O. of the 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Captain William Frederick Higginson, 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers and Lt. Col. Herbert Carrington Smith C.O. of the 2nd Hampshire Regiment.

Being really, really, cheeky could I also ask for a search please for Richard Goodwin Rooth? The son of Lt. Col. Rooth, he joined the 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers around 1920. When the regiment was disbanded he joined the West Yorks Regiment. He was married on 3 November 1933.

Regards,

Philip

John,

I have located the page with Harold Dowdell on it. It is just a notification of death along with hundreds of other men. If you e-mail me by clicking on my name I will send you a PDF of the page.

Sec. Lt. Dowdell's entry is a notification of death. I can send a PDF page or an image, also his commission.

Here is a link to his Commission in the London Gazette.

Many thanks Steve,

I am very grateful for all that information. I'm interested in it all. I had only asked for three officers, in case I would be thought greedy!

As you mentioned Major Edwyn Fetherstonhaugh, I wonder would it also be possible to get the information on him, please?

Kind regards,

Philip

I don't know if you can assist me, my Grandfather Pte 64457 John Duncan RAMC was wounded in action sometime during 1916, I have tried researching the Scotsman Archives to find out when but without success, because he was a Corps man and not serving with a 'Scottish' unit , they no longer listed the rest of the UK casualties due to paper shortages at the time. Thank you.

Philip,

Missed your mention of Fetherstonhaugh:
