Hi Paul

Could you please have a look for anything about 6780 2nd Lt Douglas Archibald White that would shed light on which battalion of the East Surreys he was with in October 1917. Similarly Lt (later Captain) Reginald Ernest Pudney, who was made a temporary 2nd Lieutenant on 8th January 1916 (London Gazette) in the Royal Fusiliers, but may have been on attachment to the East Surreys.

See my post at http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...mp;#entry767599 for more info and the reason why I want this information.

Many thanks

Phil

Steve,

Many thanks. It is interesting that on the basis of this one (excellent) poem Oxland is designated by CWGC as 'one of the war poets,'

Sorry Phil,

No hits on white / Pudney in the Times.

Have you tried the Officers Files at the NA?

WO 339/51092 PUDNEY R [1914-1922]

WO 339/108955 PUDNEY R [1914-1922]

WO 339/61384 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/64805 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/71020 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/79288 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/87590 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/91166 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/93937 WHITE D [1914-1922]

WO 339/138043 WHITE D [1914-1922]

Details can be sketchy but sometimes they will enable you to locate the officer at a given time.

Steve.

Hi Steve

Thanks for looking. Yes, I've found the White/Pudney records at the NA but it looks as though I'll need to go there to check them as they don't seem to be on line. Likewise the war diaries for 7th and 8th East Surreys.

Very frustrating that Lt White was 7th, attached to the 8th, as otherwise I would have been able to pin down the correct battalion fairly easily.

Many thanks again

Best wishes

Phil

May I ask for some information too, please?

I'm looking for an obituary that was published on the Times , 11 July 1916, for Lieutenant Robert Quilter Gilson (11th Suffolk Regiment), killed in action on the Somme on 1 July 1916. I ignore if there were other news about him before that date (as it appears the obituary dates ten days after his death! Was it usual?)

Also, if I'm not bothering, I would like to know if there is anything on The Times about two brothers:

Lieutenant Geoffrey Bache Smith

19th Lancashire Fusiliers

Died of Wounds near Arras on 3 December 1916

(there seems to be no MIC for him)

and

2nd Lieutenant Roger Smith

4th South Wales Borderers

Killed in action in Mesopotamia on 25 January 1917

Many thanks!!

I somehow missed the flurry of activity on this topic. I'll post Elena's "easy" one and have a look later....

The Times, Tuesday, Jul 11, 1916; pg. 8; Issue 41216; col C

post-6536-1196789272.jpg

Delay on officer obituaries was indeed about 1 or 2 weeks, unless the officer was "missing".

Steve.

Paul - The Times certainly seems to keep you busy! I have recently lost my access to th archive and wonder if you would have the time to look up two ex-119th Brigade officers? Both met unusual ends and there may be obituaries, reports of death or inquests. They are:

Lt-Col Anthony John Muirhead (post war rank) (1890-1939). Was the MP for Wells and committed suicide supposedly because of woryy about a gammy leg keeping him out of WW2.

Lt-Col(?) R.J.Andrews. Died as a result of an accident in a garage in 1923.

Anything welcome

Many thanks

Mike

You must be snowed under with your generous offer of help! I am seeking to destroy - or at least dent - the myth that the Brits did not publicise its leading fighter pilots (particularly, McCudden, Mannock, Bishop, Collishaw and Beachamp Proctor). I have been directed to pieces in US papers (via) the Aerodrome site, which show a number of news agency stories about some of these individuals with London datelines (and can give you these dates). I am interested to know if anything appeared in the Times - news stories, profiles, awards, obits etc. Come back if you need any further information.

Best Regards

David
