Alison

The other Saturday at Kew I read some more RE TC WDs on their computers which is a lot quicker than waiting for your papers to come to the Reading Room. 184 and 256 TC names o/rs but most do not. 257 TC has Field Returns. Most just have Weekly Progress Sheets. No trace of 121966 T Lloyd but I have more to do on my next trip.

This morning I finally finished checking the service numbers of the RE wounded in the Times OCLs for 1916 against FMP. So far it has yielded over 280 full and partial casualty lists. I will continue to look for them by including the names in the 1916 RE WDs and Field Returns on to my RE index and checking those.

Brian

EDIT: The first Unit to name names is 26 FC of 1 Division. Other ranks comings and goings are attached to the WDs from 1915 to March 1916 inclusive. The first name on List 72 dated 01/01/1916 is 23668 Dvr J Wilson, Admitted to hospital having been "kicked in the testicles by a horse". Preferable to a German bullet but still serious.

I thought that I had got all the 1916 France RE wounded lists but there are still some hiding away.

List H A 5006 dated December 1916. I have put numbers to most of them and will check FMP with those numbers to see if there is a better copy.

I found another list H A 5006 today but it is no clearer, one of the men on it 98129 Spr Sheehan, W is named on this earlier list H A 3000 dated September 1916. I have ranted on in the past about not finding any RE lists for France September 1916, one of which my gf would have been on. Today I found two, this one and List H B 2137 which is almost unreadable. I could only manage to put Spr Carr and Dvr Dean on to my index. The numbers are clearer so I will check them on FMP next week. I am hoping that I will see my gf on such an obscure list.

List H A 947 (cont). July 1916.

RE 35196 is William Walker but his service record does not show IWT in July 1916. Earlier in the year he appeared to be serving with 7 FC.

RE 80974 is Cyril H Hines, again his service record does not show ROD.

On my index as possibles.

138333 J Thompson ROD, 63734 G Thompson 103 FC  and 110981 F Bartindale 1 Lab Bn are on List H A 943 (post 520). 122722 J Couchman 9 Lab Bn, 115614 N Burleigh 4 Lab Bn and 68407 J Ford IWT are on both List HA 943 and List H A 944 (post 581).

Thank you, Brian. I have a medal to L/370 Gunner F. Hodgkinson, R.F.A., so brilliant to have a casualty list that includes him.

Glad I could help. The 1916 RE lists are becoming few and far between I fear. Just to remind anyone interested in these lists they are not only for RE and RA. By putting the Regiment of your choice into the Optional Keywords box on FMP and searching with the service number of your man you may get a result. Where it shows a surname and initial under British Army Service Records it will be one of these floating documents, which include these casualty lists, that are found in Service and Pension Records. Alternatively you can search under surname and initial, or just surname.
