Just to get you started Alison, and to see what Brian thinks, here is the result of some 30 names I've looked at. For about 50% there is some sort of record that lets us identify unit in 1917; I suspect trying say the 14/15 Roll might be a bit far back because many of these men changed units in 2 years.

Brian, do you see any pattern, I don't? but then I haven't looked to see which FieldCompany was in which Division to see if there was some grouping at a higher level. Charlie.  PS Another FMP snippet for 57 Field Co RE. (the original on FMP is clearer)

Alison, did he have a particular trade or skill that might indicate posting to a more specialised unit ? engine driver, miner etc?

When I checked the names on the same Times OCL RE wounded list as my gf, 11/10/1916, it did give me some clues and showed some patterns. Some of the names were 20 Div RE and were wounded on 03/09/1916 at Guillemont. By coincidence one of the names on the 11/10/1916 list was 16050 Donald Spr J C, who is shown on the list you have just posted from 57 FC in 1917. When I did a FMP check on him I got the same document. I have put the names on to my RE index but did not post it because it was too faint. The exercise is worth doing. I notice from your spreadsheet you have a 30 Div County Palatine RE name, 81515 William Henry Pee. He died of wounds on 03/05/1918. Are they some of the names from the 06/09/1917 list ?

In the meantime, List HA 7223 from March 1917

They are all from that one list, which has about 200 names for RE that day.

The more the merrier! I have pm'd Alison and offered to do the FMP checks for her. Any lists that turn up I can index the RE names. My gf went to France sometime after 31/12/1915, was wounded in early September 1916 and discharged in August 1917.

Alison / Charlie

OCL 06/09/1917

I have checked all the service numbers on FMP and names against service/pension records. A high percentage of those wounded were, not surprisingly, 31/07/1917. Alison thinks that her ancestor 121996 Spr Thomas Lloyd was a Tunneller. Five of the names on the list were from 254 TC, Two from 173 TC and one each from 171 TC, 175 TC and 255 TC. Three other Tunneller's Units were not readable.

The resuls for the Field Companies were as follows:

8 Div / 490 FC                                Seven  (o/rs not named in the WD)

"         Sigs Co                               One (Two more on the OCL named in 8 Sigs WD)

15 Div / Sigs Co                             Three (Three more on OCL named, but no numbers, in 15 Sigs WD)

19 Div / 81 FC                                Two (both named in WD along with one other on OCL)

29 Div / 455 FC                              One

30 Div / 202 FC                              Four (One more on the OCL with a 30 Div RE number 83300 Sgt Williams)

39 Div / 225 FC                              One

 "           227 FC                              Two

41 Div / 233 FC                              Five (All named in WD with four others on OCL). The WD names 17 other o/r casualties for July and August.

49 Div / 57 FC                                Three

55 Div / 423 FC                              Five

63 Div / 248 FC                              One

 "           Sigs Co                             One

66 Div / 432 FC                              Two

Plus eleven from various Sigs HQ Units and one from a Tramway Unit.

I am aware that there were twenty five Tunnellers Units 170 to 185 inc and 250 to 258 inc. The WDs have been digitised but I could not find 254 (WO 95/488/8 and 488/9) on Ancestry. Does anyone know if they are on Ancestry?

Thank you

Thanks for the link. I was aware of that method of searching Ancestry by just putting the WO 95 ref (less the WO 95) into the keywords box but got no luck. The thread explains why. I've not been to Kew for a while, it's a 500 mile round trip which I do on a Saturday leaving home at 0500 to get there at 0900. Always worth it though. I've never looked at the Tunnellers WDs having always assumed that my gf was in a FC, so I will make the effort.

Cheers

Brian

You are amazing. I had a bit of a car accident so apologies for not responding sooner. All ok though. I  have found some of the same info above on ancestry but as far as Lloyd goes I have no clue as to what he did as a soldier.  All my grandfather told me was that he had been a very brave soldier.  He didn't get on with him but as a soldier himself he was sure Lloyd had shell shock. He was a miner on joining up in 1916 in his forties.  I just thought it likely he was a tunneller.  It is also possible he was part of mines rescue in those days before war. Just going away from Lloyd I notice Eggington hospital mentioned above. I work in Etwall and that hospital is now a care home. It is down a windy country lane which is a dead end. Quite a peaceful place to recover.  I am aware of there being photos on th e walls of the original building of patients and nurses.  As a school we researched each soldier on the local memorial and, as expected, the village still has families of those lost still living around the area. Think it worth going up to the care home and getting some pics if anyone is interested?

Apart from looking for my grandfather, by posting these I am trying to create a RE index for 1916 and 1917. Full marks to FMP for indexing these but they need to be in a kind of library. I am only indexing the RE names and I hope that the other Corps shown e.g. RGA and RAMC are of interest to other Forum members. The lists that I have posted so far have resulted from a FMP search of the service numbers of the RE wounded in the Times OCL July to December 1916 inc. I have finished copying the names of the RE wounded from the Times OCL January to June 1916 inc and will start to check these numbers in the near future. In the meantime a faint list H  A 5897 January 1917. My first attempt to post without reducing in size.

The WD of 57 FC RE (49 Div) for 21/07/1917 records that the enemy bombarded Nieuport with gas shells on the night 21st-22nd causing casualties to 3 Officers and 55 other ranks. New form of gas used. The WD for the CRE puts the figure at 3 plus approx 62 and also has a map of the area.

46 of them are named on this list dated 18/08/1917.
