German names from Wolf's book

Conflicting dates for the destruction of UB 7 and the demise of its crew. The Ehrenrangliste states 27 October. "Der Krieg in Türkischen Gewässern" gives the date of 27 September when UB 7 departed Varna on its final cruise. The Geheimer Marine-Verlustliste gives 27 September 1916 as the date of death of the crew.

There's no mystery about the loss date for UB 7. It's September 27, 1916. The wreck of the small German submarine has been found in recent years 15 miles SE of Varna. The boat was lost while outbound when it got into a Bulgarian defensive minefield with the body of one of the boat’s crew, Bootsmannmaat der Reserve Johann Mohrschladt, washing up on November 12, 1916 some 30 miles northeast of Varna.

Hi Michael,

Absolutely, I agree. It is just strange that the Ehrenrangliste gives the date of death for both Lütjohann and Heinke as 27 October 1916.

Thank guys,

Yes the different spellings for Heibey, comes from the sources, which almost always seam to muck German names, when converting from Ottoman or English.

All relate to this Artillery officer

as for Heiberg    Capt / Hptm    Deutsche Militär-Mission Türkei in Istanbul

I surpose another of those who names are stuffed up?

A spelling mistake (again) with this one.

Kurt/Curt Heinemann-Grüder, born 5 September 1880 in Erfurt. Active Prussian medical officer. Following his studies at the Kaiser Wilhelms-Akademie from 1899 to 1903, he was promoted to Unterarzt, receiving his doctorate on 16 March 1905 and was commissioned as an Unterarzt on 15.6.05 serving with Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 176. Promoted to Oberarzt on 27.1.08 he was transferred to Kürassier-Regiment Nr 2 on 18 October 1910. He served with the Garde-Füsilier-Regiment from 18 November 1911 until promotion to Stabsarzt on transfer to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 151 on 1 October 1912. His final peace-time assignment was on the instructional staff of the Kaiser Wilhelms-Akademie from 18 February 1913. At mobilisation assigned to the Reserve medical company of 28. Reserve-Division until appointment as consulting surgeon to the 5th Ottoman army in December 1915. From June 1916 head surgeon at the German lines of communication hospital in Smyrna. Charakter as an Oberstabsarzt a.D. on 24 May 1921. The addition of Grüder to his surname was a war or immediate post-war change as he is always shown as Heinemann pre-war. Practiced medicine in Potsdam and Berlin post-war. Served as an Oberfeldartzt (Oberstleutnant) in WW2.

Died 1958

Mystery!! No Schelling or Helling in the navy at that rank. A Marine-Ingenieur Hinrich Schelling served on U-Boats in the Mediterranean but survived the war.

Adolf Hering, born June 2, 1887, entered the navy in October 1906, promoted to Marine-Ingenieur (very probably) August 3, 1914, and then to Marine-Oberingenieur June 10, 1916.

Hering was on the on the Turkish cruisers Berk-i Satvet and Mecidiye from about September 1914 to April 1915 apparently as chief engineer (!), then on to the Turkish torpedo boats as (if I'm interpreting this correctly) as the chief engineer for a half-flotilla, then Goeben to December 1917. Hering then returns to Germany, undergoes submarine training, and finishes the war as the chief engineer on U 53.

Out of naval service September 9, 1920 with Charakter as Kapitänleutnant (I). German decoration in early 1918 just the EK2.

Glenn, as to Hentig, possibly but I show he RTG in 1917 when and if he went back to Turkey is unclear?

Hentig Werner Otto von    Lt deR    The Niedermayer-Hentig Expedition to Afghanistan German Afghan Mission 1915-16 Mesopotania & Persia    1914-17    (1886 at Berlin died 8-8-84) diplomatic service attaché to the German mission at Beijing 1909 from Prussian Cuirassier Regiment No 3 WIA 1914 at the Battle of the Masurian Lakes posted Legationssekretär to Istanbul and Tehran 3-15 - led the Niedermayer–Hentig Expedition Mesopotania 1915 returned to Germany via China and USA arrived Berlin 9-6-17 with Röhr awarded Ottoman War Medal later leading lawyers in Berlin and diplomat Botschafter German Consul General to San Francisco and later Bogotá 1930's post war West German ambassador to Indonesia brother Hans

So that would mean he could not command an MG Group in 1918 in Palestine, thats why his brother seamed about right, but all I could find on him, was he was on Staff (Ottoman source) so a brick wall again?

Hildemann Fritz    Capt / Hptm    German Pioneer Co

Hi Steve,

these seems a good one:

Leutnant Fritz Hildemann of Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 21 in Mainz. Born 18 March 1889 in Friedrichsort near Kiel. Commissioned on 22.3.10 and was attending a course in oriental languages in Berlin in 1914. Even better for our purposes is the fact that he became a Wehrmacht Generalleutnant. On 12 June 1915 assigned to the German Engineer Command in Turkey and in September 1916 attached to the chief of staff of the Ottoman 6th Army. From October 1916 to late December 1916 attached to the staff of the German military plenipotentiary in Iraq. Thereafter back to Germany and numerous further assignments. Interwar police officer and senior engineer commander in WW2. Died 15 December 1975 in Bad Boll/Göppingen.
