Gerhard Högemann, born February 6, 1875, entered service April 1896, Kapitänleutnant der Seewehr I June 13, 1912. Högemann makes a cameo appearance with the Sonderkommado Türkei in September (plus maybe late August) 1915 before returning home.  Out of naval service November 27, 1918.

Högemann’s main job before and being in Turkey was as the commander of the “Schiffsperre d. Jade”, so the EKI isn’t a surprise. He was also awarded Oldenburg’s Friedrich-August Cross 1st Class, plus a Landwehrdienstauszeichnung 2nd Class among German decorations.

Out of service January 21, 1920. German decoration by early 1918 is just the EK2.

Hohenberg Graf von    OberStabszarzt Dr

This one is hideously wrong!

Friedrich Maximilian (Fritz) Graf von Hochberg Freiherr von Fürstenstein, born 3 May 1868 at Fürstenstein, was a retired former active Prussian cavalry officer who had served in the Regiment Garde du Corps. Commissioned on 18.9.88 and transferred into reserve status on 18 April 1891. He entered the Garde-Landwehr-Kavallerie in 1893 and left military service entirely on 18 November 1893 with a view to emigrating. The Count was something of an explorer and was the author of the book "An Eastern Voyage". He led two Red Cross expeditions to the Gallipoli front in a private capacity. He was not not an Oberstabsarzt! Died 16 September 1921.

Steve,

see my last post regarding “Hohenberg”. It is spelt as “Hochberg” in Wolf’s book but that is the only thing that is correct. It is further misspelt as Hohenberg in yet another double entry.

Adolf Hölder, born November 11, 1888, entered service October 1911, Leutnant der Reserve der Matrosenartillerie October 14, 1917. Hölder is listed in theater with the Sonderkommando as an armaments Inspector from April/May 1915 (long before being commissioned) to the end of the war. The only exception is from Febuary/March 1917 to May 1917, when he’s with the Deutsche Abteilung Bosporus.

Out of service January 21, 1920. German decorations is early 1918 are the EK2 plus Württemberg’s Silberne Militärverdienstmedaille and Silberne Verdienstmedaille (I’m going to guess he was probably from there.)

And while I'm at it, because he's right down the page from Hölder, we have:

Albert Zähringer, born June 17, 1888, entered service October 1908, Leutnant der Reserve der Matrosenartillerie October 14, 1917. Sonderkommando Türkei from September or October 1914 to the end of the war.

Out of service January 21, 1920. German decorations is early 1918 are the EK2 and Baden’s Silberne Verdienstmedaille on the ribbon of the Carl-Friedrich Militärverdienstmedaille. (Again, he’s probably from there.)

Steve,

the basic problem in this case, is there is not a Prince of Hohenlohe-Oehringen with the given name of Friedrich who was an officer in the time frame to hold the rank of an Oberleutnant, let alone major.

Wolf only lists him as Prinz von Hohenlohe. Similarly no first name is given in "Die Adler des Kaisers im Orient 1915-1919" Which begs the question, were does Friedrich come from?

If I were to hazard a guess, my top suspect is Leutnant/Oberleutnant Kraft Friedrich Karl Prinz von Hohenlohe-Oehringen (1892-1966) whose parent regiment was 3. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment. Even so, tying this officer down to the Fliegertruppe has been problematical.

Glött Graf Fugger zu     LtzS Dr Marine

We covered this gentleman in the Germans and Sinking of the HMS Ben My Chree thread but here are his details again:

Dr. Hermann Graf Fugger zu Gloett (Glött) (12 October 1872-20 June 1936) was a member of the very senior Bavarian noble house of Fugger. He was not an officer of the Kaiserliche Marine (an hence not a Leutnant zur See) but a former Bavarian infantry officer who served in the Infanterie-Leib-Regiment, the premier infantry regiment of that contingent. He was commissioned into the ILR on 12 February 1895 with a Patent of seniority granted on 4 March 1895. His military service was relatively short as he left the army on 16 December 1896 and was thus a Leutnant a.D.  He entered the Navy on 9 April 1910 and was confirmed as a Kriegsgerichtsrat on 29 April 1913.

Hülst von (Theobald)     Capt / Hptm (Maj)

Lets deal with the easy one first:

Hauptmann (1.10.13) Theobald von Hülst, born 24 May 1877 at Gullub in West Prussia. Active foot artillery officer who was serving in Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr. 4 at the outbreak of war. Retired 25 June 1919 with the Charakter of a major. Returned to service in 1933 and rose to the rank of Generalmajor z.V. Died 7 December 1951 in Münster. His biography in the Biblio Verlag series on general officers is deafeningly silent on any Middle Eastern service. His service, is however confirmed in "Deutsche Offiziere in der Türkei."

Huber (R.O.) Karl Otto    Capt / Hptm (Maj)

the name Huber is rather common and therefore awkward!

The only Bavarian reserve officer with the name of Karl Huber who could conceivably have achieved the rank of a Bavarian Hauptmann was one Leutnant (24.1.10) Karl Huber of 18. Infanterie-Regiment, a teacher in Mannheim.

"Deutsche Offiziere in der Türkei", just states Bavarian Hauptmann der Reserve with no further detail.

Glenn,

I checked the Ranglisten des Kaiserlichen und Königlichen Heeres 1918

There was no Paul Ippen, but were a Julius (Oblt deR 56 IR) and Emil (Capt 12 IR)

But was he a civilian with a SNCO rank (Kadett/Fähnrich) as many were?

Another "throw to the keeper"

Waldemar Jaeger, born January 24, 1895, entered service August 8, 1914, Leutnant der Reserve der Matrosenartillerie May 24, 1917.

Jaeger arrives in theater August or September 1915, mainly being at the Bosporus with some time also spent at the Dardanelles. He's sent to Russia (Odessa, then Sevastopol) from March/April 1918 to the end of the war.

Out of service January 21, 1920.  German decoration as of early 1918 is just the EK2.
