Paul Fanger is not the officer you seek. There was one, born April 11, 1890, Crew 1908, promoted top Kapitänleutnant on April 28, 1918, but he spent the entire war on the battleship Deutschland (to September 1916) and then the battlecruiser Moltke. He stays in the navy postwar and makes full admiral in World War II but does not survive the war. A quick check of the 1927 Rangliste doesn’t show any Otttoman decorations for him, offering further evidence that he wasn’t in the theater.

There are no other officers named “Fanger” in the navy Ehrenrangliste.

Dr. Karl Fiévet, born May 12, 1881, entered the navy in October 1906, promoted to Stabarzt (medical-branch equivalent to a Kapitänleutnant) on March 22, 1914. He spend less time in theater than indicated above. He's assigned to the fleet in Constantinople from November 1914 to February 1915 and then he’s specifically on Breslau to August 1915. After that, he’s back in Germany.  Out of naval service on November 24, 1919; Charakter as Oberstabsarzt on April 27, 1921.

Fiévet’s German decorations in early 1918 are the EK2 and the Red Cross Medal 3rd Class.

Note that per the 1918 Rangliste, the name is spelled “Fiévet”, with the accent on the e.

I entirely agree with Michael's comments. There is not a shred of evidence that Paul Fanger ever stepped foot in the Mediterranean theatre. His career summary in his documents at the BA-MA in Freiburg are entirely in agreement with his summary in the Ehrenrangliste.  As Michael correctly points out, there was no other Fanger which makes "Fanger, Lieutenant, Navy, 1916, Breslau" another problematical entry.

Dr. Johannes Flebbe, born September 12, 1880,  joined the navy in October 1901, Oberassistentarzt der Reserve October 14, 1911 Stabsarzt der Reserve June 10, 1916.

From about September to December 1915 he’s listed in the Enrenrangliste as a surgeon at a Turkish field hospital on Gallipoli (Turkish major). He’s then listed as a doctor on the Corcovado at Constantinople, chief doctor at the hospital Taurus, all that through April 1917, when he heads back to Germany.

He’s also listed as in charge of the German medical mission in Bulgaria in October 1918 before returning home again.

Out of naval service December 31, 1918

Flebbe’s German decorations in early 1918 are the EK2 and Hamburg’s Hanseatic Cross.

Not the same officer. The Adolf Fischer that commands the 367th Infantry Division in WWII is this guy: https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/4372/Fischer-Adolf-Generalmajor.htm who was only promoted to Leutnant in 1915.

There’s a different Fischer with a lot of Mediterranean-theater experience that’s promoted to major on April 1, 1923 who's very probably your guy. Unfortunately, I don’t have his first name and Fischer is a very common last name. His decorations include the Order of the Medjidie 3rd Class with swords, Imtiaz Medal, Silver Liakat Medal, and the Iron Half Moon plus the Austrian Militär-Verdienstkreuz. The German decorations are the EK1, Württemberg’s Military Merit Order, Saxony’s Albert Order, Württemberg’s Friedrich Order, Oldenburg’s Friedrich-August Cross 1st Class, Brunswick’s War Merit Cross 2nd Class, and Lübeck’s Hanseatic Cross.

Hauptmann (1.10.12) a.D. Adolf Fischer, born 4 September 1877 in Groß-Biesnitz, Kreis Görlitz and originally commissioned into Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 6. A former officer of the Schutztruppe in German South West Africa from late 1904 to 1913. After the war he was a published author who wrote predominantly about German South West Africa. Died in 1946. Amongst his numerous decorations, he held the Liakat in silver with swords and the Iron Crescent.

Some information and a small photo here: Unfortunately, it sheds no light on his Ottoman service.

The later char. General der Infanterie Herbert Fischer (1882-1939) and incidentally also a military mission officer; the Württemberg lieutenant Fischer also listed in Wolf's book.

Thank you,

I notice Freudenberg Walther has a number of Colonial medals (Kolonialdenkmunze & Sudwetafrikadenkmunze in Stahl), does that mean his ship was in South West Africa during the troubles there around 1905-07?

Todays

Freutel Johannes    ObLt Marine    Ordnance (Rüstungs- und Munitionsinspektion in Istanbul) Arms and Munitions Inspectorate in Istanbul - Hilfsarbeiter Nahkampfmittel (Melee weapons) (under Wiesmann 1916)     1915-16    awarded EK II 1-16 (not identified) shown in Klaus Wolf's Book

Johann Freutel, born February 22, 1881, entered the navy August 1899, promoted to Feuerwerks-Leutnant on July 14, 1914 and then to Feuerwerks-Oberleutnant on October 31, 1917. Not a lot of detail on him in the Ehrenrangliste; he was part of the the Sonderkommando but dates not provided.

German decoration by August 1916 and still the same in early 1918 is just the EK2 and the Dienstauszeihnung 1st Class.

Out of naval service October 22, 1919. Charakter as Feuerwerks-Kapitänleutnant on August 10, 1920. Died September 1920.

Freudenberg’s Kolonialdenkmunze probably dates to 1911, when he was on the survey ship Planet, which help put down the Sokehs rebellion in the Caroline Islands.

Cheers Michael,

I was not aware of this rebellion in my area of the Ocean.

What about the Sudwetafrika Denkmunze in Stahl

Wiki shows South West African uprising of 1904-06

But also includes 1907-08

awarded to all military personnel in the German armed forces who have rendered outstanding service through participation without reproach

No actual campaign service was actually necessary for the award in steel. It could be awarded for service in the homeland or at see in support of operations and transport. None of his assignments appear to have been in direct connection with the land operations in German South West Africa:

1905: SMS Brandenburg

1906: 2. Torpedo-boat division

1907: SMS Vineta

1908: SMS Freya

Difficult to be certain but a good possibility is Hauptmann der Reserve (27.1.15) Rudolf Fritzsche (Landwehr-Bezirk Kattowitz) of Railway-Regiment Nr. 3 and a mining engineer to boot. Charakter as a Major on 13 September 1921.
