Michael Lowrey Posted 5 March Share Posted 5 March Paul Fanger is not the officer you seek. There was one, born April 11, 1890, Crew 1908, promoted top Kapitänleutnant on April 28, 1918, but he spent the entire war on the battleship Deutschland (to September 1916) and then the battlecruiser Moltke. He stays in the navy postwar and makes full admiral in World War II but does not survive the war. A quick check of the 1927 Rangliste doesn’t show any Otttoman decorations for him, offering further evidence that he wasn’t in the theater. There are no other officers named “Fanger” in the navy Ehrenrangliste.
Michael Lowrey Posted 5 March Share Posted 5 March Dr. Karl Fiévet, born May 12, 1881, entered the navy in October 1906, promoted to Stabarzt (medical-branch equivalent to a Kapitänleutnant) on March 22, 1914. He spend less time in theater than indicated above. He's assigned to the fleet in Constantinople from November 1914 to February 1915 and then he’s specifically on Breslau to August 1915. After that, he’s back in Germany. Out of naval service on November 24, 1919; Charakter as Oberstabsarzt on April 27, 1921. Fiévet’s German decorations in early 1918 are the EK2 and the Red Cross Medal 3rd Class. Note that per the 1918 Rangliste, the name is spelled “Fiévet”, with the accent on the e. I entirely agree with Michael's comments. There is not a shred of evidence that Paul Fanger ever stepped foot in the Mediterranean theatre. His career summary in his documents at the BA-MA in Freiburg are entirely in agreement with his summary in the Ehrenrangliste. As Michael correctly points out, there was no other Fanger which makes "Fanger, Lieutenant, Navy, 1916, Breslau" another problematical entry.
