Back to the drawing board then. The Marne? Nope. A little closer. My first thought with yours Marilyne was Grootebeeke but I don’t think so. Knotty Posted 28 January Share Posted 28 January I’m sure I have seen that during an organised tour some 25+ years ago. Is it somewhere near to Compiègne? and if I remember correctly wasn’t it carved into a rock face by a French soldier. Trying to find a photo with information on😁

Knotty Posted 28 January Share Posted 28 January The photo says “ In a quarry near to the village of Machemont, carved by a member of French Foreign Legion ” Am I any closer?

Admin Michelle Young Posted 29 January Admin Share Posted 29 January Carrière de Montigny it is. A fascinating place. Our friends Dave Nyhlen and his wife Aude are volunteers there. We just happened to be staying at their bed and breakfast on the Patriomoine weekend, and Dave got us on the English speaking tour. Worth going if you are in the area, and their B&B is excellent. This one sounds like a top tip complete with accomodation Michelle, thank you. I was wondering if it was a marker for a place where the French had stopped the Germans in 1918, it reminded me of one not far from Paris CDG airport which bears the motto "Here but no further" or something similar. Unfortunately I don't have a photo, otherwise it would make a good one to add..... Pete.

A lot of limestone quarries and associated fossils, and history from the Franco Prussian and Great War, many caves/cut outs used for billets, hospitals etc. and because of the nature of the terrain the soldiers were very good at graffiti 😁 Hope you find this of interest https://www.cheminsdememoire.gouv.fr/en/geological-view-chemin-des-dames (thank my daughter for the link)

Let me put an end to your suffering: waffle shop was closed... the Grenadier Bookshop however, was not. And as I was without Adult supervision... And no, not Prowse Point... there's a church on the horizon which might help with identification... M.

I thought it might be Voormezele and the cemetery might be Bedford House, but the tower is too squat. It doesn't mean it isn't Bedford House of course but I'm not holding my breath. Pete.
