A couple of further hints for #9751 as I will be in bed till this afternoon.

You will know when you get her by confirming on her wiki page her connection to a German shepherd, her Germanic name, and the fact that she trained as a teacher.

She also founded a newspaper and a hospital.

Night night.

Is she Louise Weiss?

This chap, a fellow Brummie, had three sons who fought in the war. Two of them survived, but the one who didn't was an international sportsman in two different sports.

This aside, we have a more direct connection between him and the Great War.

Apologies for the poor quality of the picture, but it's the only one of him that I could find.

P.S. He isn't a writer/ author.

Red herring or not, I wouldn't have got there without it.😊

Anyone apart from Knotty want to venture on this nom-de-plumed gentleman? He did use a pen, but not to write.

:D I think I may assume Kenneth Bird alias Fougasse identified.

Portrait from wiki.

This is an early one:

No takers yet for #9766?

A couple more hints then:

He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his war efforts.

In his way, he is honoured every day.

Hi NF

Is it Alfred Bird of Custard fame, I’m sure I read somewhere that the 3 bird symbol on the custard tin referred to his sons, but I know very little about him or his sons, and to be honest can’t find out much about the family.

ps timely win today

Cheers we certainly needed the three points but not out of the woods yet.

Nice try with Mr. Bird but not him I'm afraid.

Take a little time to reflect.

Oh dear. The indifference to this one is almost tangible from here. Having just got up after my nightshift I fully expected him to be solved by the clues you already have in your hands, but alas, it would seem that a further prompt might be needed. Have you really forgotten yet?

Going back to his son; his sports were rugby and cricket.

The father held the post of Lord Mayor, and if I throw Belgium into the mix, that should help to amalgamate the other clues.

Well unravelled ajs! Sir Harry it is. This link also contains one to his sporting son, killed 100 years ago yesterday.

And there’s me looking around for Mayors of Brum, definitely not on my game at the moment. Well played ajs, and out of interest what is the ship in your avatar?

I doubt if we have had this man before, but we may have had his more famous brother whom he disliked.

Thanks for that Tony, just me being nosey, and whilst I’m on it was remiss of me not to welcome you to the madhouse thread of WIT.

Been missing for a while cutting the bl**dy grass again, roll on the cooler weather, doesn’t grow so quick - I know I’ll fetch me coat
