He wrote one of the first books published on the war called Under Fire, the link below gives some details of its content. He was rather an older volunteer in 1914 to be in the first tranche of the French army and was invalided out of fighting after being declared unfit, but he remained on the clerical side of things. He survived the war and died in Russia in 1935.(see Wiki below), a colourful character is the parlance probably used now to describe his life. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/884270383 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Barbusse ps that’s one less in my collection of WITs Barbusse it is. My next clue was to refer to being "under fire." Comprehensive answer John, nothing for me to add.

Guest Posted 20 April , 2018 Share Posted 20 April , 2018 1024 × 785Images may be subject to copyright I thought Henri Barbusse looked a deal more similar to Herr Flick. But no matter-any excuse to put up a pic. of Ian Carmichael (An artillery officer of the Second World War,I believe)- the best Peter Wimsey

It's possible to use google to search for an image not just text. I promise not to do it again as it rather spoils the fun. The best way to stop everyone doing it is to crop the image and maybe colourise it a little. So for instance google can't recognise the attached version. Alas,No UG- wrong nationality. This man's work in London is a classic red herring-even by WIT standards. The delivery service clue is reference to a very old gag-I have my coat ready to go when you get this chap.
Knotty Posted 20 April , 2018 Share Posted 20 April , 2018 Ok GUEST, you’ll probably have to get your coat, I have, accordingly to the good lady here indoors, wasted spent a couple of hours trawling around to get the answer, do you want his nom de plume, or his birth name, especially as he finally gave up his medical specialisation to concentrate on his writings. Good of you to come clean, but those of us who are slightly more long-term inmates are fully aware of this function, and practice a self denying ordinance when it comes to that, otherwise the thread descends into a meaningless exercise. We don't really have any rules as such, but google image searching is deemed a cardinal sin. Seeing as it a first offence, and with mitigation, the lopping off of just one hand will suffice on this occasion. Knotty Posted 20 April , 2018 Share Posted 20 April , 2018 Here goes, I believe, it is Louis-Ferdinand Céline the nom de plume of Louis Ferdinand Auguste Destouches, quite a brilliant(my opinion) but cantankerous man. He enlisted in the French army in 1912, and subsequently was there at the start of the war before being wounded in 1915, sent to London he had a clerical position in the French passport office, but his wound proved to be more serious and he was invalided out of the service and returned home. After the war in 1919 he decided to enter the field of medicine, qualifying in 1923 as a doctor, specialising in obstetrics including “delivery”, his first post being in a maternity hospital. Early in 1930’s, after toying with the idea for several years, he gave up medical practice and move into the field of writing, in which he had success. You can follow his life here:- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis-Ferdinand_Céline Hat size, unknown, about 7½ but I would have thought a beret would have been more appropriate

In my day any inmate caught thus would be directed to get out the best scotch, fill one chamber of the service revolver and do the decent thing. What's the world coming to? I concur with NF, AJS strikes me as both a good egg and a splendid chap, and definitely not a rum cove, so I think we should overlook the totally heinous and most non triumphant nature of the crime. I'll keep quiet about being the only inmate who doesn't know how to use the software for fear of ribbing in the dorm after lights out. Frankly the prospect of me solving a WiT? by reasoning and investigation is ludicrously remote at the moment, so not knowing how to is probably a Good Thing. Not much chance of watching any telly I'm afraid as I'm working 12hr night shifts at the moment. However, that does give me plenty of time for W.I.T. (Breakdowns permitting).
