The electric target controller for the 'flight simulator'. These were used to control the amount of time [6secs] that the target was visible.

This is a particularly rare photograph for two reasons, firstly, WW1 photographs of the Maudslay 3-ton A-Type Lorry are seldom seen, and secondly, this particular Maudslay A-Type Lorry has the rare ' Instruction ' marking, indicating that is was being used by an Army Service Corps Driving School for ASC Driver training, again, such an ' Instruction ' vehicle marking is seldom seen.

This particular photograph of the Maudslay A-Type ' Instruction ' Lorry was taken at an ASC Driving School on the ' Italian Front '.

What do we think is actually happening in the photograph? To me it looks like the second vehicle has a problem with the rear wheel/trye but I can't think what roll the three men pushing against the side of the wagon are playing as you would presume they would simply jack the lorry up? They can't be pushing it because its stuck as they're is no driver at the wheel. Also, what about the wagon which can be seen. Is this on a trailer of the 2nd lorry?

David,

The men pushing the lorry behind the Maudslay look to be trying to get the left rear-wheel of that lorry back on the road, as it seems that lorry took too sharp a left turn and the left rear-wheel came off the road fell into a ditch. Once they get that rear-wheel back on firm ground, the lorry can be driven forward.

The wagon behind that lorry is a farm wagon, as looking at the other photographs I have of this ASC Driving School, it was located on an Italian farm.

LF

Can you make out the writing on the stricken vehicle side canvas or the dropside?

Looking at it closely again, I can now see there is a driver at the wheel of the second vehicle and in fact I think the Maudley might be in the process of giving it a pull. As you say, that rear wheel has dropped into a ditch and the men look as if they are trying to prevent it slipping any further into it.

There looks like another line under that and some writing on the wooden side. I have tried zooming but it pixalates.

The writing on the wooden side of that lorry reads ' Instruction ', however, there is nothing on the lorry's canvas except ' W ^ D '.

David,

The problem of the second ASC ' Instruction ' Lorry's rear-wheel coming off the road was obviously resolved, as in the following two photographs taken at the ASC Driving School somewhere in Italy, we see both the Maudslay A-Type and the other lorry, which looks to be either an Italian Fiat or Lancia, back on the road.

LF

Fascinating pair of photos, clearly of the two lorries making the return journey and interesting the way the photographer has deemed taking the photos worth his while in setting his camera up etc.

This part of the Italian Front was probably chosen for the Army Service Corps' Driving School due to the challenges it presented to the ASC Learner Drivers with its narrow roads, inclines and tight bends.

Of the 1700+ ' Maudslay ' Lorries built for the British War Department during WW1, the bad news, is that as of today only one example is known to still exist. However, the very good news, is that lone example of the WW1 ' Maudslay ' A-Type Lorry has been carefully restored by the Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry being the original home of the Maudslay Motor Company. This restored WW1 Maudslay A-Type Lorry, is on display at the Coventry Transport Museum.

Here are a series of photographs of the Coventry Transport Museum's restored Maudslay A-Type Lorry.
