Muerrisch Posted 22 December , 2010 Share Posted 22 December , 2010 Herewith a couple of examples - including one on the Simplfied SD. All men are wearing the red-on-serge of the QWR. This is followed by an original example on a July 1918-ish SD of the 2/16th. The third image shows the black-on-serge of the QVR, plus a couple of originals. Why the differing sizes I don't know - perhaps the top one is for greatcoats. Cheers, GT. Thee lad top left has a driving prize badge or a distance-judging star lower right [his] and a ? badge upper right. Driving prizes not uncommon in the TF. Muerrisch Posted 22 December , 2010 Share Posted 22 December , 2010 16th Battn N/Derby band Aldershot 1915 with respect, this is a "Corps of Drums" rather than a "band". The instruments here are EXACTLY those of a Corps of Drums ...... once full members, each man would be appointed "drummer", with those equipped as such also carrying a slung bugle [except bass drummer for obvious reasons], and remainder with fife and sometimes doubling up on bugle. Grovetown Posted 22 December , 2010 Share Posted 22 December , 2010 Thee lad top left has a driving prize badge or a distance-judging star lower right [his] and a ? badge upper right. Driving prizes not uncommon in the TF. Lower right is a five pointed star; upper right appears to be an empty wreath. Have another image of a QWR with exact same shape in same position. Possibly wreath contents rendered invisible by monochromatic film? If not and actually empty, don't know what it is. Thought the below might interest you: it's the Efficiency Diamond being worn on early SD (man second from left, lower right sleeve (his)). Not something you see everyday... Cheers, GT. Muerrisch Posted 22 December , 2010 Share Posted 22 December , 2010 Thank you very much: distance-judging it is! I have a few efficiency diamonds worn [unofficially/ illegally] by Eastbourne College OTC. As for the empty wreath ....... a title for a spooky Christmas offering perhaps? It is a very small wreath, and the only one comparable for size that I know of is the India pattern 's in wreath' for infantry scout. This weath is nearly complete around the S. I know this was worn by ex-India units on the Western Front but .........
john gregory Posted 22 December , 2010 Share Posted 22 December , 2010 John, Could he be 2/8th Bn? Mark Could be Mark but the photo's that I have seen of the 2nd/8th they have all been wearing the T/8/Notts and Derby title also the diamond was 3x2 which looks bigger than than this chap's flash. I think you are right that the larger titles are for greatcoats, that was generally the practice of the period for GM titles too.
Muerrisch Posted 24 December , 2010 Share Posted 24 December , 2010 Apologies in advance: I did not keep a record of the origin of this cracker of a photo, not long before the war. Not sure of regiment, bu fusilier. The sergeant-major has an unusual cuff n.b. Again, apologies, and grovels, but this is such a fine study I hope it is agreed we can share it for Christmas.
