War Diaries - Available Free UPDATED 1st July 2012

Recommended Posts

A number of the Canadian war diaries have been transcribed from the on-line records.

I see my list has not been updated for some time on the MATRIX so I had better tend to that!

http://cefresearch.c...aries/index.htm

I have only a few pages of the war diary for my grandfather in the 26th Northumberland Fusiliers, so I would be pleased if someone can tell me how I might get my hands on such a file, transcribed would be great but even raw would be better than nothing. I am particularly interested in late 1916 to mid 1917, after which he was sent home, somewhat in pieces.

1/4th Bn Gordons. I have only got 1915 formatted on the 1/4th Gordons site so far (link above) but I have the whole thing transcribed now so happy to do look ups/provide sections.

This diary mentions almost no O/Rs by name unfortunately.

I also have pretty big chunks of the 51st Highland Div. Diary from Feb 1916 on although this was selectively photographed so no guarantees!

I have the complete diary for the 16th West Yorks (1st Bradford Pals) as jpegs but email will only work for a few pages. There are 291 images, and almost 600 megabytes. One day I will divide the folder into months. I am happy to copy to CD and post, but a donation to the GWF funds would always be an appropriate recognition.

UPDATED 20th OCTOBER 2011

Many thanks to all who have listed War Diaries or provided details of links to other valuable websites.

I have included a few direct links to the Canadian Archive but if the link required doesn't work then go to the Gernaral Link and you can proceed from there.

I don't know if you are aware that the amount of posts on the page of a thread can be varied to suit the reader. Mine is set at a 100 posts per page and so I only have 3 pages.

You may therefore want to consider changing page number references in the opening post to post number refrences?

UPDATED 11th NOVEMBER 2011

covering Post No 1 British Infantry Regiments and Post No 215 Other British War Diaries

All cross referencing between the 4 lists of diaries refers to their repective posts:

Post No 1 - Main British Infantry Regimental War Diaries

Post 215 - Other British War Diaries

Post 127 - Canadian War Diaries

Post 233 - Australian and NZ War Diaries

If you require a diary please PM the respective member or use the link. Certain links may not always work so you may have to go to the main website eg Canadian Archive. When sending a PM please be specific as to dates etc as the later downloads from the National Archive are very large files.

Also, if you wish to find out if any member has a diary not listed, it is best if you start a new post.

Continuing thanks to those members who list available war diaries.

UPDATED 26th NOVEMBER 2012

Many thanks to all members who include war diaries in the above lists

PLEASE NOTE THAT:

1 REQUESTS FOR WAR DIARIES SHOULD BE SENT TO THE MEMBER QUOTED ON THE LIST

2 MANY DIARIES DOWNLOADED FROM THE NATIONAL ARCHIVE ARE VERY LARGE FILES SO YOU SHOULD BE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE PERIOD REQUIRED

3 IF YOU REQUIRE THE FULL DIARY THEN IT MAY BE MORE CONVENIENT FOR YOU TO DOWNLOAD THE DIARY FROM THE NATIONAL ARCHIVE

ALSO

If the diary you require is NOT listed then it is usually best to start a new post rather than add to this one as it will be more obvious to members of the Forum.

ALTERNATIVELY

If your required diary is not listed it may well be available from the National Archive as a download - check out the master list on this post

I have complete copies of the following:

HQ 38th Infantry Brigade - 1/8/15 to 31/1/16

6th Btn Kings Own Royal Lancast Regiment - for some reason this diary seems to be missing, however a report of their general activities could be put together using the other diaries.

6th Btn East Lancashire Regiment 1/8/15 - 31/1/16

6th Btn South " " 1/8/15 - 31/1/16

6th Btn North " " 1/8/15 - 31/1/16

HQ 39th Infantry Brigade - 20/6/15 to 31/1/16

9th Btn Royal Warwickshire Regiment 20/6/15 - 31/1/16

7th Btn Gloucestershire Regiment 20/6/15 - 31/1/16

9th Btn Worcestershire Regiment 20/6/15 - 31/1/16

7th Btn North Staffordshire Regiment 20/6/15 - 31/1/16

At the moment they are as digitised, but as time permits I will be transcribing all of them into word documents; currently only the Glosters are available as a word document.

UPDATED 24th JANUARY 2012

This update includes changes to the Main British War Diary list to include diaries as mentioned by members above.

I have also listed diaries which are on Flickr. However, having been advised that the number of active media on the post exceeds limits I have had to make them inactive although one remains. If you want to activate the flicker link copy it to your browser and add www.

Thanks to all who list diaries for members.

As the list of diaries is on different posts, any member who would like the spreadsheet please PM me.

PLEASE SEE IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN POST 242
