To add interest to our trips and as a clear guide I spent quite a time locating Farms and bunkers etc onto google views from trench maps, here is a small one for Zonnebeke Church

Thank you Peter a good comparison, it is easy for us to forget the troops had to live and cope with war in the harsh winter months

Can the location be identified on a trench map Peter?

In the same area, here is a Ribecourt aerial comparison

Andy, sorry but can't get to trench map at present.....the location is the road from Trescault, D15, out of the wood and down the hill into Havrincourt. You can get the view in google maps. Thought Havrincourt may interest you.

Richard, I believe it's late January 1917, (can't be precise at present as don't have access to records).

Peter

Hi Peter

Was the British line so far forward in Jan 17, and even if it was wouldn't they be in view of the German lines running around the western side of Havrincourt?

Allthough the attached trench map from 8-3-17 appears to put the line about here others from later in the year i.e. just before Cambrai, put the German line in this position.

This is a view of Bullecourt; the original taken on 9 May 1917. This is particularly poignant as that was the day my great-uncle, 2/Lt Gordon Hamilton Smith, 8th Btn, Devonshire Regiment was killed attacking along the the trench to the right of the road. It is interesting to think that he might be in this photograph somewhere. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the Missing.

tootrock, a nice comparison aerial view.......I think that by doing these views we can remember the men that fought in those terrible conditions, a fine and quite poignant example from yourself

Thank you

Richard, yes you are correct. My mistake...should have put january '18, not '17.

Apologies for not thinking.

Peter

PS photo location on the map is about central square 33

Hi Peter,

You're spot on there, see extract of trench map dated 3-1-18 attached, the front line was further to the east of the village than I thought.

Regards

Richard

PS Andy, sorry to highjack your thread - it won't happen again!

Staying with the Cambrai area theme for now, west of Graincourt on the canal bank is the Spoil bank

The bank was used as a machine gun defence position
