Remembered Today:

Then and Now .....90 years ago and today

We did our annual tour to the Somme last week.

Again I did some then and now photo' s.

To find the location of this photo I went to the local cafe for help.

The pond in front of the houses has disappeared and the Mairie has now been

built opposite the houses. To take it from the same place as the original

photographer was not possible. Then the right building was a cafe and on the present

photo the word cafe is also on the building.

The real problems with this sort of image set, and I do think that they are really great, is either the lack of colour on the early image OR the lack of B&W on the modern image.

Software programs can produce images in B&W. I wonder what they would look like.

Apart from that folks, really great stuff.

No, I do not mind. I appreciate the way you put these 2 photos into one.

The way they transform from black and white into colour give it a special effect.

Just a funny story when taking the last photo. I was standing in front of the house

to make a now photo of the church. I had this photo with me but had no idea

where it was taken. Out of the house came a madame with a bicycle and I approached

her and showed the photo and asked in French if she knew the location in the village.

Glancing on it she said Mais, c' est ma maison (It is my house).

She had never seen this photo before so after I had my now photo taken I gave her the then photo.

Best regards,

Sir Cliff

Cheers for that Sir Cliff,

Your photos were taken in just the right spot in comparison with the originals, well snapped.

Landsturm infantrymen from 1. bayer. Landsturm Infanterie Bataillon 'München' (I. B. 1) and some Austrian allies in Burghausen

A beautiful backdrop with the magnificent Burghausen Castle clearly visible on the horizon. Burghausen is the largest city in the Altötting district of Oberbayern in Germany. It is situated on the Salzach river, near the border with Austria. It's castle is the longest castle in Europe (1,043 m).

Riqueval Bridge 1918 & 2009...the best I could do without falling in the canal, not sure how the 137th Brigade stuck themselves to the bank..it was rather steep biggrin.gif

Regards Doug

I tried the same shot last year but in addition to the slope, the foliage was much thicker.
