Jspencer Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Hi, I know you said that the members of the south Staffs are a bit thin on the ground on your CD, but I have to ask anyway....I'm looking for a photo of Serjeant Joseph Spencer, though I believe he was in the 7th battalion...like I said, just had to ask cos you've had some excellent results. Well done! Michelle
SOMMESOLDIER Posted 29 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Hi Michelle, No problems you asking at all, and thanks for the praise ! I haven't any details on your man, that is because the Cd Rom I have got, is to do with Officers (Commissioned). The rank of Serjeant Is an N.C.O. ( Non Commissioned Officer ). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Cheers Tim.

CLAUDE STEWART JACKSON CAPTAIN 3rd BATTN COLDSTREAM GUARDS. Because this is his original topic, I usually let Tim answer first, but his topic is only for Officers Died 1914 and 1916 and your man died in 1917 so I feel it is okay if I go first on this one. Captain Claude Stewart Jackson, Coldstream Guards Fourth son of Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet and his wife, Amelia Lydia, Lady Jackson of Stansted House, Essex. Educated at Harrow School from 1906-1910 and at RMC, Sandhurst Commissioned in the 3rd Bn, Coldstream Guards in Feb 1912 Went to France on 12 Aug 14 and took part in the Retreat from Mons and the Battles of the Marne and Aisne. Severely wounded in the head in Sept 1914 MID for distinguished services at Landrecies In May 1917 he married Laura Emily, daughter of the Hon. William and Mrs. Pearson of Killmany, Grippsland, Australia After recovering from his wounds he served in several staff positions in France Rejoined his Battalion in Sept 17 KIA near Ypres on 9 Oct 1917 His Colonel wrote: "He led his Company, as we all new he would, with the utmost bravery and coolness, under a heavy fire from both artillery and machine guns. Just before reaching the objective, "Pat" was hit in the thigh by a piece of shell - not at all a dangerous or painful wound - and he was quite cheery when being dressed. Hardly, however, had they finished tying up his wound, when he was hit through the head by a sniper's bullet and killed on the spot. I don't think the War had the same horrors for him as it had for some - he took it all so quietly and philosophically - and yet he could always be trusted to do his best (and that is saying a good deal) for his Battalion and for his Regiment." Sources: Harrow Memorials of the Great War, Volume V; Harrow School Register, 1845-1925; Harrovian War Supplement, April 6th, 1918. Photo of Captain Jackson below is from the first mentioned sources. James Brown Posted 11 February , 2005 Share Posted 11 February , 2005 Hi Tim I am doing research on the War Memorials of Ayrshire and have over the years built up a database of over 3,000 men whose names are commemorated on them. The research will be put into my website as each village is completed, well as near completed as my investigative study will allow. I have just acquired a new home for the site so it is still being updated. I can PM you the link if you like. It is not readily available at the moment for all to see, as I feel it is still in the early stages of development. (If any member of this forum would like to go and look at it now, please PM me and I will send the link) The site will be free for anyone to come along and look for information for a relative who died in the First World War. I have many Officers, who have been researched in my database. Could you please look up these Officers for me? Dennis H. J. Ely Captain 15th (S) Battalion Durham Light Infantry Killed in Action 1st July 1916 Ayr Memorial George Vallance McKinlay Boyd Captain 17th (S) Battalion Highland Light Infantry (3rd Glasgow) (Glasgow Commercials) Died 1st July 1916 Troon Memorial James Johnstone Mabin Captain 11th (S) Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) Killed in Action on the 14th July 1916 Ayr Memorial Charles McKerrow Captain (Attached) 10th (S) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers Died 20th of December 1916 Ayr Memorial Ewan Holmes Humphrey James Wilson Lieutenant 1st Battalion Black Watch Killed in Action on the 8th of September 1914 Ayr Memorial There are many Lieutenants and 2nd/Lt’s on my Database, too many to trouble you with at the same time. To follow on from a previously asked question, are the CD ROMs readily available? Many Thanks in advance. Kind Regards James Brown
