His MM card has him down as a Driver with  'O' Bty RHA.

Charlie wanted to thank you for pointing out he was with O not Q Bty, this in turn led me to look closer at  the war diary for 5th Bde Army troops and it was G Bty  not C Bty  as reported by 51st Field Ambulance in 1918 when he was wounded . It seems these letter named Btys caused much confusion.

I have a couple of men from WW1

68959 Gunner Frederick Thomas Newcomb, (1890-1914) entered France on 16 August 1914. The 39th Brigade RFA comprised of 46th, 51st and 54th batteries, he succumbed to his wounds 5 November 1914.  -  Where was his unit when he was Killed ?

29151 Sergt., Ernest Shufflebottom DCM, 80th Bty RFA; he was engaged in the action at Le Cateau on 26 August 1914, later KiA 31 July 1917 with 149th Brigade RA  -  Was killed during the Battle of Passchendaele?

Major Henry Francis Burt, MC, 216th Battery, Royal Artillery, Army Veterinary Corps.

The Record of Service of Solicitors and Articled Clerks 1914-1918 has recorded the following on Major Burt.

HOWARD FRANCIS BURT. Admitted April 1907. Managing Clerk with W. Bishop, Solicitor to London and South Western Railway Company, Waterloo Station, S.E. Joined September 23, 1914, as 2nd Lieut., Royal Field Artillery, promoted Lieut. September 1915, Capt. December 1915, A/Major Jan. 1917, Temp. Major April 1918. Twice mentioned in Dispatches. Awarded the M.C. Served continuously in France, Belgium, and Germany from November 1914 to March 1919.

However, his All UK, World War 1 Medal Rolls and Index Cards 1914-1920 Indicate served with Royal Artillery/Army Veterinary Corps. Any views on this?

Regards

Martin

Hi Dick

In respect of Ernest Shufflebottom DCM, he enlisted prior to WW1 and served in India with 80th Battery RFA and took part in the NWF 1908 operations. Would you have record when 80th Battery went to India?
