The Cornelius I have posted is the only Cornelius Donovan registered as having enlisted in Surrey

and

The J donovan is the only Donovan with the initial J to have been born in Croydon & enlisted in Surrey.

If these or any others are not your men then the ones you are looking for did not enlist in Surrey. As Croydon was only just over the border form the London administrative district the men oyu are looking for may have enlisted there. Unfortunatley I do not have the london records. Perhaps someone else on the forum can assist.

Also remember that at this time many people swapped their first and middle names around. An example is a great uncle of mine who was Thomas Leslie Goulter. It says Thomas Leslie on his birth certificate but he was always known in the family as Leslie & Leslie is the first name on his school records and death certificate.

Good luck

Chris.

having made your kind offer I hope you don't think I was trying to steal your thunder.

Hope you find the cd as interesting as I have. Although it gets frustrating as I know at least two of my men attested at these recruitment centres but they are not in these records.

Hi

Any chance of a lookup for Arthur Joseph Edwards born c1896 and living in Norwood? He served in the Royal West Surreys, but other than that I have little details.

Much appreciated

Chris

I know you say living in Norwood but do you know where he was born?

Let me know if you think he is one of the ones in the screen shot though & I will look him up for you. Having said that, unless you have the Rgt wrong it doesn't look like he's here.

Hi Andy

Many thanks for the information. He was born Q4 1895 In West Norwood, but the registration district looks like it was Lambeth. Therefore the Arthur Edwards born in Lambeth looks likely. However I have rather a fine photo of him in 1918 / 1919 in the West Surreys. See thread Great Great Uncle.

Medal cards etc have been elusive to find, so perhaps he changed regiment? Is this likely?

Many thanks

Chris

Chris

Couple of things to note, the remarks entry, "J Bloodworth, 30 Robert Road" could be a friend or employer etc. It is not guaranteed to be next of kin although this is a possibility and yes, a number of men did change Unit/Rgt etc during the course of the war. A number of men on the memorial I am researching did this.

Best of luck with your research

You're in luck.

Got frustrated with dead ends in my research tonight  so have done your look ups.

John Arthur Pighills - Sorry no record.

Ernest W Adams & Herbert Tugwell are below.

Both of these men are on the same register and the same page although Herbert enlisted three after Ernest, or at least that's how it's recorded.

Andy,

Thank you for looking these men up. Its interesting that they were both salesmen. I wonder if the whole surrey group were all employed with the same firm.

The Surrey lads, numbered 12670 thru 12700ish, all appear to have initially served in 7th Lincs. I wonder if the were kept in the same company? Of the 30 men, 12 were commissioned, several more becoming NCOs and sadly at least 6 died during the war.

Tugwell would become a Sgt, be wounded in Dec 1915, and later serve with the Labour Corps, while Adams was killed on 20 Sep 1915.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Could well be the same firm.

Both Salesmen, both joined up at the same time, both born Dulwich, both living in Kingston on Thames, all rather coincidental

Anyone else need look ups from these registers?

Don't want to step on anyone's toes but I think this is John Arthur Peghill (not Pighills as suggested)...
