Ah, I was thinking of "Monument en hommage aux civils innocents"

The Monument erected by the city of Le Cateau-cambresis with the assistance of the city of Catillon in memory of the innocent civilians shot by the Germans for possession of pigeons.

The end of a nice 4 days of the Yzer!!!

That's just cruel. But it does beg the question - is the waffle shop back open?

To put you out of your misery, it’s the Arbre Ronde at Le Cateau.

That is the best news I've had all day. All I need now is a passport........

I've tried searching in the extensive library for it but drew a blank; can you point me to something about its significance? I've never got as far as Le Cateau but at least I now know that Henri Matisse was born there. Which is nice.

Pete.

L’Arbre Ronde is near the village of Troisvilles. The Germans used the tree as an artillery range marker.
15 Brigade if 5 Div had their HQ close by. Rather like the Lone Tree at Loos, there are stories of the tree being cut down.

Thanks Michelle, that fills the gap nicely. We can have famous trees as a theme maybe.......

Surely that’s for the music thread, @Fattyowls if not submit it quick, a new subject is required 👍

I had the good fortune to tour Mons and Le Cateau with the wonderful Richard Holmes many years ago. A memorable day, despite the aftermath of a heavy evening in Brussels the night before. Didn’t remember the tree, though. I got as far as street viewing the Le Cateau area and could see it was promising as a match, but didn’t get there. A good challenge!

Back from lunch and thought I recognised @Michelle Young earlier, that is the small Gourock Trench Cemetery in the industrial area of Arras, my twice removed cousin is buried there, L/Corp Charles Knott, served with the Essex Regiment.

The CWGC cemetery photo is taken from his grave (D4) looking back at the cross, you can just see the top.

Well done @Knotty! All the more poignant to hear your relative is buried there.

Before going on with guesses, I'll let you partake in my holiday today... on our way to Baie de Somme, I parked at the location.of Nb 2 Australian General and then we went for lunch on the dike...
