Hi ZW,

Been off the GWF for a month (work...!!!) - so catch up time!!!

Not only a rare marking - a 98/05 from before January-August 1915 with the ears intact, and one of these 'bent-backed' ones, in which the blade and tang are not aligned... I have seen a few but haven't paid much attention to them, except thinkingt they were usually late in WW1 rather than early...

 Unit-marked 84/98 n.A. bayonets are not that common - I guess these are dated 1915 or 1916?

This bayonet was not indended to use by 1st or second line troops in the front, but only weared by soldiers as a sidearm

especially in Belgium section.

And its a Berthier I, so also rather a rare find!

This makes sense - the short Ersatz and the 88/94 were originally produced, as far as I can make out, for cavalry troops, starting in very late 1914-early 1915 (with Ersatz production endening before the end of 1915), abd began to be supplied to non-mounted troops after about summer 1915.

Wow, Dimitrios! That is quite a collection there - and what a variety of bayonets and unit marks! I can quite see why RW was in touch with you for some examples?

Now, with an infant son in your house - where do you keep all these? I keep most of mine in a pair of IKEA 'Alexander' cabinets, with the spares in locked suitcases under the bed and under the desk, but my two boys do know 'Do NOT touch'!
