A WAR TIME UNIT MARKED 98/05 Na PLAIN BAYTONET

WAR TIME UNIT MARKING

137 INFANTRY REGIMENT

137th (2nd Lower Alsatian) Infantry

MADE ON 1916

BELONGED TO XXI ARMY CORPS.

The XXI Army Corps / XXI AK (German: XXI. Armee-Korps) was a corps level command of the German Army, before and during World War I.

As the German Army expanded in the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century, the XXI Army Corps was set up on 1 October 1912 in Saarbrücken as the Generalkommando (headquarters) for the districts of Koblenz, Trier and part of Alsace-Lorraine. It took over command of 31st Division from XV Corps and the newly formed 42nd Division (the last division to be formed by the peacetime army). General der Infanterie Fritz von Below, former commander of 1st Guards Division, took command.

It was assigned to the VII Army Inspectorate. but joined the predominantly Bavarian 6th Army at the start of the First World War. It was still in existence at the end of the war in the 5th Army, Heeresgruppe Gallwitz on the Western Front.

On mobilization on 2 August 1914 the Corps was restructured. 42nd Cavalry Brigade was withdrawn to form part of the 7th Cavalry Division  and the 31st Cavalry Brigade was broken up and its regiments assigned to the divisions as reconnaissance units. Divisions received engineer companies and other support units from the Corps headquarters. Unusually, the Corps retained its 9th infantry regiment on mobilisation. In summary, XXI Corps mobilised with 27 infantry battalions, 9 machine gun companies (54 machine guns), 8 cavalry squadrons, 24 field artillery batteries (144 guns), 4 heavy artillery batteries (16 guns), 3 pioneer companies, and an aviation detachment.

A 98/05 SAWBACK Aa BAYONET

DATE 1906

UNIT MARKED TO 13TH PIONEER

WHICH IS FOR WYTTEMBERG

A VERY RARE UNIT MARKING, IF YOY THINK WYTTEMBERG HAS THE 2% OF THE TOTAL  IMPERIAL GERMAN ARMY.

The 26th Division (26. Division), formally the 26th Division (1st Royal Württemberg) (26. Division (1. Königlich Württembergische)), was a unit of the Prussian/German Army. It was headquartered in Stuttgart, the capital of the Kingdom of Württemberg. The division was subordinated in peacetime to the XIII (Royal Württemberg) Corps (XIII. (Königlich Württembergisches) Armeekorps). The division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. The division was raised and recruited in the Kingdom of Württemberg.

Divisions underwent many changes during the war, with regiments moving from division to division, and some being destroyed and rebuilt. During the war, most divisions became triangular – one infantry brigade with three infantry regiments rather than two infantry brigades of two regiments (a "square division"). An artillery commander replaced the artillery brigade headquarters, the cavalry was further reduced, the engineer contingent was increased, and a divisional signals command was created. The 26th Infantry Division's order of battle on March 20, 1918, was as follows:

  • 51. Infanterie-Brigade
    • Grenadier-Regiment Königin Olga (1. Württembergisches) Nr. 119
    • Infanterie-Regiment Alt-Württemberg (3. Württembergisches) Nr. 121
    • Infanterie-Regiment Kaiser Friedrich, König von Preußen (7. Württembergisches) Nr. 125
    • Maschinengewehr-Scharfschützen-Abteilung Nr. 40
  • 2.Eskadron/Ulanen-Regiment König Karl (1. Württembergisches) Nr. 19
  • Artillerie-Kommandeur 58:
    • Feldartillerie-Regiment Prinz-Regent Luitpold von Bayern (2. Württembergisches) Nr. 29
    • II./Niederschlesisches Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr. 5
  • Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 143:
    • 1.Kompanie/Württembergisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 13
    • 5.Kompanie/Württembergisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 13
    • Minenwerfer-Kompanie Nr. 26

an extremely rare ersatz gras bayonet.

this has been modified to fit the gewehr 88.

the original wood grips and rivets have been removed.

the blade tang cut and a steel spacer inserted, with a new pair of longer wood grips.

those were fitted and rivetted back into position, using larger domed rivets.

the back of the hilt has been stepped down by 2 mm for a lenght of 39 mm, reducing the depth of the attachment slot to 7,5 mm.

the rear of the hilt with a "T" german crown acceptance mark.

T sectionsteel blade,  with the original date and arsena removed and the blade bent away for 20 mm from the guard.

This bayonet appeared on Roy Williams Book aboyt Ersatz Bayonets, page 516, 517, N. 783 [EB 122].

This is the ONLY bayonets has ever recorded and is UNIQUE!!!!!!
