Remembered Today:

Partial Casualty Lists

I am trying to assist Alison by doing FMP checks on the RE wounded OCL 06/09/1917 in order to see if any patterns emerge from surviving service and pension records which will help to identify which unit her ancestor 121966 Thomas Lloyd, who is named on this OCL, served with.

84649 Barton, Pnr W F is named on this OCL.

EDIT: This partial list dates to January 1917, the service record of Pnr Calvert records that he was admitted to hospital on 06/01/1917, Sprs Goddard and Evans have hospital admissions in January and Pnr Smith served with the BEF until February 1917.

I found 3 from my Grandfather's 126th Field Co RE which seems very unlike the details in the war diary for 1916 with days like 4 killed 12 wounded appearing. How complete is this?

Gunner Bailey

My notes tell me that the 1916 WDs of 126 FC and the other FCs of 21 Div (97 and 98) name other ranks. One of my future projects is to go through the 1916 RE WDs again to include them on my RE index. I now regard it as a basic check on any service number to do a FMP search to see if it brings up any of these floating documents which include casualty lists, leave lists, Police Gazette, London Gazette, British Jewry Book of Honour etc. I have done it for the service numbers of 30 Div RE with over 60 hits. Impossible to say how many there will be in any body of numbers, but there will be some. Would you mind passing the Casualty List numbers (starts with H, HA or HB) that you have on your three to me please and I will check if I have got them.

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian

All I have is a copy of the war diary. Pages like this are typical.

Thanks Brian but no. My Grandfather survived without physical wounds but certainly came home shell shocked. He is mentioned once in the War Diary in 1917 but only in regard to a temporary posting. Having been in France from September 1915 he came home in late 1919 having finished the war in Cologne. He had a very tough time 1915-1918.

I found another Tunneller from 254 TC on the OCL. 102558 Wear Spr S (Samuel). He is named on Casualty List H 6764 dated March 1916 serving in 173 TC but his statement of services records that he was wounded on 31/07/1917 serving with 254 TC.

Forgot to mention Alison that the previous was not as a result of 06/09/1917 OCL but a name search on 50405 Gregory F who was on the 11/10/1916 OCL. It came up with that partial list with 520038 Gregory F A. Another partial here from a name check on 48384 Kelly J (also on the 11/10/1916 OCL) which comes up with 79821 Kelly J.

EDIT: Dated to December 1916. Gnrs Cairns and Bowker were admitted with their self inflicted condition in late October early November 1916 and spent some time in hospital. Dvrs Humphries and Thomas of the Units shown have hospital admissions in December 1916

Have you seen this book, Brian? It suggests it contains a list of Welsh miners who served in RE Tunnelling. Might this be of interest to Allison?

The H number on this list dated 11/02/1916 is obscured so I will post it on this thread.

Hi all, thanks again for the help.  Yes the book I do have it and saw several names of sappers who most probably knew or worked with Tom Lloyd because of the tiny place they came from.  It gives info on those killed but the author appear to have missed out a lot who couldn't be found on ancestry or clearly identified etc.  I have tried to make contact and put some questions to him.  You never know I may get a response.  Was hoping P Barton would respond regarding Tom Lloyd in his book Beneath Flanders Fields but nothing so far.  Am waiting for further certs to arrive in case I can get a clue from them about Lloyd.

post 124.  If it helps, RGA Webb and Harrison both have hospital admissions 12/8/17. The first for GSW and the second for gastritis. So your dates should be around then.
