That would be an HD list, one of those listed on Farnworth, MGC, record here.

"British Army Service Records 1914-1920 Image | findmypast.co.uk" https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f007299024%2f00198&parentid=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f7299024%2f11%2f176

Probably Amara, not Baghdad?

Charlie

Link gives choice of (incl a good list of others on form W3034(edit, I mean 3040)- a rare form surviving in a service record?)

HD4384 31/8/17 2BGH Amara NYD.

HD 4534 24/9/17 BritConvDep Amara Dysentery.

HD 4552 24/9/17 To ConvCamp ex 2BGH Amara Dysentery.

Thus form is probably 24/9/17 Amara...?

Addinell ASC has a service record showing admitted 2BGH Amara 26/9/17.

I saw the AF B 103 for William Farnworth 186 Co MGC adm 28/08/1917 dis 29/09/1917 but it was the AF B 103 in the record of George Winterbottom where I got Baghdad. 157 HB adm hos Baghdad 15/09/1917 debility.

What is useful in Farnworth's record is the (I think rare) inclusion of Form W3034( edit I mean 3040). This (edit W3034) is the authority for the entries on B103 and (edit- comparison of B103 and W3040) demonstrates clearly that not all is shown on B103.

When Farnworth first went to Hospital in Aug it was NYD. But the partial casualty sheet you posted has him as Dysentery. This description only matches the late Sept HD records as detailed on W3034(edit, I mean 3040)

For Winterbottom, his W3034 (edit I mean 3040) has not survived and I agree the B103 entry for 15/9/17 says Baghdad and Debility. I wonder if there was a subsequent entry on W3040 that was not recorded on B103 covering a move to Amara before he went to ConvDepot. We won't know. Furthermore the partial Cas List says NYD !

Gets confusing but all part of the learning curve. Not helped by transcription errors on dates.

Charlie

PS.  Do you think that the D in HD could be from IEF'D', the name of  mesopotamian expeditionary force ?

Thanks to your tip re the Royal Naval Division records on FMP I’ve managed to tie in a few RND men to partials lists which helps me be confident that this partial list would be HD 4552. As Farnworth had Dysentry it cannot be HD4384 and with him being admitted to 2BGH Amara, the same as Addinell in HD4552 I think that’s the obvious choice

Any thoughts on my observations on W3034- is it rare? And is HD named after IEF'D'?

I think they are rare, Ive only come across a handful of them in the many thousands of records I’ve looked at.

The HD prefix might have a link to IEF”D” but with HA being for admissions to French hospitals and HB to UK ones can we be certain?

Thanks Dave.

Farnworth's W3034 lists 13 different HD numbers between HD1061 of 15/10/16 and HD4696 of 29/9/17, all in Mespot.

Edit.  Copy now added in my orig post re Farnworth above.

I think Dave is right. H and HA are F&F, HB is UK (having come from any theatre), HC is Med and HD is Mespot. I have also posted three HW lists which are on p 28,35 and 54.

Details about this partial list can be explained in a couple of ways. The heading “Progress Reports…..” tells me that it is a HW prefix list. The Royal Naval Division records for R4062 Lowe W. shows that he was recorded on HW 1253 in 1 GH Etretat W/E 7/1/18, SW legs. The “SW le..” can just be seen before the tear on the list.

This list appears to be Alexandria, Egypt January 1916. See papers for 400 Harry Sculley and papers and MH 106/1935 HS Assaye for 20858 John Wood. My interest is 628 John Blackledge of the Bolton Artillery who went out to Egypt in September 1914 and most likely served in Gallipoli. Others on the list also served in Gallipoli/Suvla.

These partial lists have no prefix or number but the dates (Sept 1915-Jan 1916) tell us that they all would have an H prefix
