Guest geoff501 Posted 3 October , 2006 Share Posted 3 October , 2006 I doubt that there are, Geoff, but when you get round to it could you also check Chanak Consular Cemetery, please? Bob, Only a couple of dozen here with info. Sorry, no matches found. They seem to be coming out at around 1% - that is 1% of the casualties with an info field have a brother who also fell. Since only around half the records have info, I think there should be 4 times this (4%) and so we should only expect to find around a quarter of the total number of pairs. (you may need to think about this, it is 1/4 and not 1/2). This roughly agrees with my back-of-a-fag-packet estimate in post #114, based on the enlistment and casualty rates giving a figure of 3.4%. G F F Welch 25.1.16 (Both dedications in “Tell England” by Ernest Raymond) – Brookwood Cem Z. 177036. The Tell England dedication reads as follows: To the Memory of Reginald Vincent Campbell Corbet who fell, while a boy, in the East and George Frederick Francis Corbet who passed, while a boy, in the West is affectionately dedicated what little is best in this book, nothing else in it being worthy of them. Guest Peter Thomson Posted 9 October , 2006 Share Posted 9 October , 2006 I found your website when doing a google search regarding my two Great Uncles who were both killed at Gallipoli on 28th June 1915. There names are Lieutenant Eric James Thomson and second Lieutenant Francis Wishart Thomson of the Royal Scots Guards. A sad day for my great grandmother losing two sons at the age of 22 yrs and 24 yrs. Part of the reason for doing the search is that I am currently in the process of arranging a school history tour to Gallipoli for Easter 2008. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what these school kids should go and see? And also, does anyone know of a person/company in Turkey who would arrange a guided tour? Thanks, Peter Thomson

Guest geoff501 Posted 9 October , 2006 Share Posted 9 October , 2006 Helles, & cemeteries, complete now, I ask? Helles search is complete. 20,888 men of which 10,954 have "Son of..." and 9,058 of these in UK units. The final count was around 0.9% of the latter with one or more brothers. I've also completed: Lancashire Landing Pink Farm Cem Redoubt Cem Skew Bridge Cem 12 Tree Copse Cem (not memorial) V Beach Cem 7th Field Ambulance Cem Embarkation Pier Cem Hill 60 Cem The Farm Cem Azmak Cem Green Hill Cem Lala Baba Cem Haidir Pasha Shrapel Valley The last one I knew had some non-Anzacs. So what next? Any requests. I could do the other Anzacs. I had to fine-tune the system for Shrapnel, it was giving too many false positive hits which required too much manual checking. Two observations - the Hunt brothers were both 19 - twins? And there was a third Lowry brother - LOWRY, CYRIL JOHN PATRICK Frederick was 19 but when died in 1917, so no twins. Made a few mistakes like that myself being overloaded with data. A worry that I missed the third Lowry, when the fields are so similar, however the McKay brothers came out, quite remarkable: E. McKay: SON OF LT. R. H. MCKAY (CHESHIRE REGT.) AND MRS. M. A. MCKAY, OF 202, EDGELEY RD., STOCKPORT. H. McKay SON OF ROBERT MCKAY (LATE LT. AND QMR. 4TH BN. CHESHIRE REGT.) AND MARY ANN MCKAY, OF 161, HALL ST., STOCKPORT. Thre is also a possibility that some with rather terse info were also missed (what do you do with Mrs Smith, of London ?), but the Anzac search may be an improvement. I've tried to find more accurate data for typical family size. I checked a batch of 50 census forms from men that I'm researching. Their average number of brothers was 1.836, in 1901, but presume not all would survive to 1914-18, but there may be other births after 1901. Remarkable only 83% of males made it to their first birthday. Some statistics from ONS were not easy to understand. There were 1,126,800 live births in 1920 for a population of 40+ million(?) compared to 1,014,700 in 1964 for a population of 50+ million. But these were both 'baby boom' years. Very few statistics available for before 1924. So I did not arrive at a better figure for the average number of brothers. What the ONS data did show, rather irrelevant to this study, was a large increase in illegitimate births in 1968. If you can remember the summer of love, you probably were'nt there, is I think, how it was described!
bobpike Posted 10 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 10 October , 2006 Geoff, A very big thank you, it's amazing & fascinating. Dare I suggest more searching where the wounded and dead ended up? Here goes - East Mudros MC Portianos MC Egypt Cemeteries e.g Chatby, Ismailia etc Malta Cemeteries e.g Pieta, Addolorata etc Gibraltar. All were 'staging posts' for wounded/sick from Gallipoli, so dates of death would need to fit with the campaign, or early into 1916.
