Kitchener's Bugle Posted 27 March , 2016 Share Posted 27 March , 2016 Hi How about Hermes carrying a caduceus? USA Medical Corps? Regards Barry Its more Old World than New World!
Medaler Posted 27 March , 2016 Share Posted 27 March , 2016 Not that it helps, but I am getting nowhere with it either! Regards, Mike
The Inspector Posted 27 March , 2016 Share Posted 27 March , 2016 OK then..is it a caduceus or a kerukeion? Judging by the suspension fitting and patina Is it approx.1880 or earlier? Europe, Asia or Africa, at least we've narrowed it down a bit Regards Barry
Medaler Posted 27 March , 2016 Share Posted 27 March , 2016 OK then..is it a caduceus or a kerukeion? Surely that depends on who is holding it? In this case I take the wings on the figure are a bit of a clue. My money is on Hermes (or Mercury). I'm not going for the 1880 date either. Everything so far has been WW1(ish), and I don't see this as an exception. The suspension could be compared with an MM, which came into being in (I think)1916. So where are we? - Not British or British Empire - but who else used cusped suspensions? I agree with the idea that it's not American, it looks, erm, how can I put this politely? Too well made to be American. Still struggling here! - quite the "Easter tease" this one! - And none of the above is Gospel - just me thinking out loud. The Inspector Posted 28 March , 2016 Share Posted 28 March , 2016 Hi AllMike, must differ re the suspension fixings. The MM (25.3.16) has one fix on the actual medal (I presume there is a technical term but I don't know it), the medal we are looking for has two and a shorter stem. I was hoping KB would give us a further clue..Roman or Greek.same staff and serpents but just guessing..... Regards Barry

Regards Barry Fair point well made Barry - and I don't know the technical term either - I have seen the double version on 1908-35 IGS medals though (with Afghanistan NWF 1919 clasp). As I said, I am guessing too - all part of the fun. I have looked for this again today, and am still no wiser. Warmest regards, Mike

The Inspector Posted 30 March , 2016 Share Posted 30 March , 2016 Hi Haven't got a clue! I'm going to guess at a Greek Commemorative Medal going off the type of ribbon and Hermes, but the suspension type doesn't seem to fit. Regards Barry. The Inspector Posted 30 March , 2016 Share Posted 30 March , 2016 (edited) Hi Knotty and all You got it, but which way is George facing? Two varieties. Regards Barry That was sneaky KB turning over the ribbon, should have looked closer and gone to somewhere! It would appear that numerous types of fixing were used. Kitchener's Bugle Posted 30 March , 2016 Share Posted 30 March , 2016 It was a tough one!!! I thought that the suspender would throw people as it does look so 19th Century British. It is a very rare medal though - in the price range of about £700 - £800.
