Seen on my holidays this summer in Lorraine:

Another painted Poilu, in Ecouviez, right on the Belgian border, with the inscription "passer-by, whoever you are, doff your hat for those who died for you"

Hi Martin and All,

Here's a Belgian version, not far from Ecouviez in Meix-devant-Virton

I was up in the Cambrai area last weekend following the tanks with Forum Pal Delta and took a few pictures of poilus on local war memorials.

First is Masnières

This is Havrincourt. The figure is a self-portrait of the sculptor, Lucien Brasseur. The monument was initially offered to Bayonne, which turned it down

And finally Bourlon

Keeping this topic alive, I came across this one in the Nice suburb of Cimiez, showing the triumphant French cockerel overcoming the eagle.

I remember seeing a memorial in Lodève, 34, Hérault, where the women and children around the tomb were arranged in social classes.

Is this unique ?

Happy New Year everyone !

In Bergues, Nord/Pas de Calais there is a memorial with a soldier lying on the ground riddled with bullets. I can't remember whether is was for which of the world wars and for soldiers or civilians.

Cheers,

Fred

I would be glad to see more photos.

Unfortunately I have only just bought a digital camera or I could have joined Mags and the others.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Ghazala !

# 220 shows a dog. Are there other memorials with a dog?

Fred

Not sure about dogs Fred.. There is a great memorial to the horses of The Great War at Chipilly.. The memorial is dedicated to those who died while fighting with the 58th (London) Division including during the Battle of Amiens in August 1918. The monument depicts an artilleryman cradling the head of his wounded horse. This divisional memorial is unusual because it includes the figure of an animal, most specifically a war horse. The inclusion of the horse pays tribute to the millions of horses who served alongside the military in the 1914-1918 war.

I don't see that this fits in as a War Monument as its on top of a church and was in position prior to the War. (Basilica constructed 1885-95)

Perhaps, but it is something most people on battlefield tours of The Somme wish to see, after comparing pictures of the original Madonna after she toppled over and leant precariously face down for a long time.
