john,

Thanks for the link, I'll try it.

FGS thank you, it's definitely worth trying, I wonder if anyone has attempted such a process?

Hi Bob,

A couple which spring to mind:

Capt Eric Francis Brown, 5th Bn Wiltshire Regt, wounded at Gallipoli 10th August,1915, upon recovery proceeded to Mesopotamia to take part in the expediton which failed to relieve Kut where he was mortally wounded, dying as a result of these wounds on 1st April, 1917.

Sec Lieut Ian Cameron Macfarlane, 11th att'd 6th Bn Yorkshire Regt, served at Gallipoli from September, 1915, proceeded to France with his battalion and was killed in action 14th September, 1916.

and a third(maybe not quite what you are looking for?):

Capt Alfred Christopher Pearson, 9th Royal Warwicks, wounded at Gallipoli 9th August, 1915 and again in Mesopotamia in February, 1917. He then became a Political Officer and was murdered by rebels in Kurdistan on 4th April, 1919.

Hope that you haven't already got these,

Robert

Private George Harris, MGC 87th Company (service no. 21374), served in Gallipoli with the 1st Battalion border Regiment Regular Army (service no. 9947 or 9941 depending on who's transcribed it) and was part of the Cape Helles landings. Transferred to the MGC in February 1916. Died in Belgium on 3rd July 1917 and is buried at Canada Farm Cemetary.

I have a photo of his medal card if that's of any use, but sadly no service record.

Thank you all.

Robert, yes Pearson is of interest.

Katie, a copy of the MIC would be very useful, if you could PM me it,

Sorry, omitted this man from an earlier posting:

13167 Pte. William Henry Randle served with 9th Battalion, Notts & Derby, at Gallipoli. He was transferred to the 10th Battalion from which unit he deserted during the Battle of the Somme. He was executed for that offence on 25th November 1916 and is buried in Cavillon Communal Cemetery in France.

There's a photograph of his grave here: http://www.chrishobbs.com/harrypoole1916.htm.

Thank you, Jim, it came as a bit of a surprise (although there is no reason why it should) seeing he had been SAD, although there were, of course, two on Gallipoli,

Paul,

Wow! Thank you very much. Are they more than likely to have served at Gallipoli, or only possibly? In other words, do I need to research each one individually?

kind regards,

Bob

Bob

Very likely.

I have used the history of the 22nd - "With the Twenty Second", revised edition, 2001. It includes the Battalion's nominal role and shows the Reinforcement Group to which each man belonged, as well as Date of Death for those KIA, DOW etc.

The 22nd landed on Gallipoli on 5 September 1915, as part of the 6th Brigade relieving elements of the 1st Division.Through a process of random selections, I established that the Originals, plus Reinforcement Groups 1,2 and 3 were those who served on the peninsula. A random selection of Reinf 4 men shows that they were not attached to the Battalion until 8 January 1916 - so I ruled them and subsequent Groups out.

I have verified a reasonable number (about 15%) of the later KIAs from the Originals + R1, R2, R3 by reference to their service records on the NAA site.

But I cant assure you that I have covered every instance where a man from one of these groups did not go to Gallipoli - eg its possible that a man who was taken sick after arrival in Egypt was hospitalised and did not rejoin the Battalion until after they returned to Egypt from Gallipoli

Its also possible that there will be the odd case where a man returned to Australia, re-enlisted and was KIA. For example I stumbled across the case of Lt HMM Wall, 19 Reinf, KIA 27.8.18. Lt Wall first enlisted with 6th Battalion and was in the landings on 25 April. He became ill in July 1915 and was returned to Australia. He re-enlisted and left Australia again on 11 May 1917, attached to the 22nd Battalion on 20.10.17and was KIA 27.8.18.

Subject to these minor qualifications, I'm very confident about the names I have given you.

Cheers

Paul
