1st AIF Posted 23 October , 2011 Share Posted 23 October , 2011 Hi Bob, Some 50,000 Australians served at Gallipoli. 7,600 died and about 21,000 were wounded. Assume that about a third of the wounded saw no further service and two thirds were eventually sent back to their units. This means of the 50,000 vets about 15,000 died or were repatriated back to Australia. If the remaining 35,000 saw further service then one could assume that up to a sixth of them would die later in the war. So therefore it could be that about 5,000-6,000 Australian Gallipoli veterans would be on the list. You'd think the number is already recorded somewhere by a government department when working out various entitlements. I think there were less than a 1,000 Aussies remaining in their units who qualified for Anzac special leave in late 1918. All the rest were dead or already repatriated. I am studying 50 Australian infantry men who served at Gallipoli. Of these 11 were killed in 1916, 4 in 1917 and 4 in 1918. Quite a project and good luck! Thank you Bob Pike Hi Bob, This looks a fascinating exercise. I only research individual photographs so what I'm about to say may sound platitudinous but it is meant with the best of intentions. Would it be possible to back track through divisions then brigades then battalions etc to arrive at rolls of honour etc for units it is know know served at Gallipoli and then eliminate from your search those who died prior to eventual disembarkation dates and those who enlisted post ?.
