Blimey --- Good Luck Bob!!

22nd Battalion AIF

517 Private Leo Aloysius McCartin to Gallipoli (Johnston's Jolly) 5.9.1915 - KIA Lt LA McCartin MC, Herleville 18.8.1918

514 Private Alexander Conrad Le Maitre to Gallipoli (Johnston's Jolly) 5.9.1915 - KIA L/Cpl AC Le Maitre, Pozieres 5.8.1916

When I get a chance, I'll have a look through the 22nd Btn history - wont be too big a job to get the originals of the 22nd sorted, but the question of whether some of the KIA from later reinforcements got to Gallipoli will take longer.

In the meantime - going fishing!!

Cheers

Hi Bob,

Some 50,000 Australians served at Gallipoli. 7,600 died and about 21,000 were wounded. Assume that about a third of the wounded saw no further service and two thirds were eventually sent back to their units. This means of the 50,000 vets about 15,000 died or were repatriated back to Australia. If the remaining 35,000 saw further service then one could assume that up to a sixth of them would die later in the war. So therefore it could be that about 5,000-6,000 Australian Gallipoli veterans would be on the list. You'd think the number is already recorded somewhere by a government department when working out various entitlements.

I think there were less than a 1,000 Aussies remaining in their units who qualified for Anzac special leave in late 1918. All the rest were dead or already repatriated.

I am studying 50 Australian infantry men who served at Gallipoli. Of these 11 were killed in 1916, 4 in 1917 and 4 in 1918.

Quite a project and good luck!

Len

Thank you all, Len your statistics are very interesting and a little daunting for this task, as you suggest, Paul (enjoy your fishing!). But it has to be done!

May I ask a question?

Frev, I assume the Southland survivors subsequently still served at Gallipoli?

Ask away!

Which Arthur Marriott are we talking about, 21757 or 15934 of the 7th and 1st battalions respectively. 13689 appears on CWGC, another 7th man.

I'll have to ask my friend who is doing this research. What I can recall is that 13689 on Thiepval is not the man; his Arthur is the brother of Robert (ex 203322 Lincs) and the local paper contains details of joining up etc but not where he died etc, I don't know if that helps so far?

*Private 50156 Herbert Dowdy, 54th Machine Gun Battalion (formerly 163rd Machine Gun Company) MGC (Infantry), from Hunstanton, Norfolk, killed in action 19th September 1918 in Palestine; buried in Ramleh War Cemetery. Formerly Private 4806 Norfolk Regiment.

*Private 50166 Alfred Hensley, 163rd Machine Gun Company MGC (Infantry), died 8th February 1917 in Egypt; buried Kantara War Memorial Cemetery. Formerly Private 4610 Norfolk Regiment.

*Note: For these two men, both their MICs state theatre entry (2B) of 23rd November 1915 - I've yet to determine if either the 1/4th or 1/5th Norfolks received a replacement draft on Gallipoli at this time (they may, of course, have remained in Egypt until the Gallipoli evacuation).

Just an update for you Bob,

I've checked diary entries for both 1/4th and 1/5th Norfolks and there are no references to replacement drafts arriving at this time (and no further arrivals before the evacuation); so unless there's any definitive evidence out there somewhere to prove otherwise I'd suggest these two chaps probably didn't actually get to serve in Gallipoli.

cheers

They often don't appear in either, though do appear on local memorials.

I am compiling a database of men who served on Gallipoli but who then died in other theatres of war, in other words Gallipoli veterans.

I have trawled through the 'Additional Information' section on CWGS and have (I think) identified all those where it mentions service at Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Suvla Bay etc so I am intereted in those others who fit into this category of veterans whom members know of through their research.

Thank you

Bob Pike

There is a list on the Fred Potts VC site which lists all the men from the Berkshire Yeomanry who died in other theatres or regiments but I cannot guarantee that they were all involved in Gallipoli although many were. Go to http://www.pottsvctrust.org/YEH.htm

regards

John

Hi Bob,

This looks a fascinating exercise. I only research individual photographs so what I'm about to say may sound platitudinous but it is meant with the best of intentions. Would it be possible to back track through divisions then brigades then battalions etc to arrive at rolls of honour etc for units it is know know served at Gallipoli and then eliminate from your search those who died prior to eventual disembarkation dates and those who enlisted post ?.

Best of Luck

FGS
