Regiment/corps etc: Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)

Battalion/etc: 8th

Surname: KIDD

Christian Name(s): Vivian Norval

Rank: Major(TP)

Died Date: 21/03/1917

Died How: Died

Supplememtary Notes: (STAFF)

There is a list of additions which includes his name as having won the MC but there is no mention of it in his SDGW entry. However, I have the older version. It may be a good idea to check it with someone on the updated version.

I looked at the London Gazette for information without avail.

I would suggest asking Rlflory (the threat is in this folder) to search his public schools/officer information, if you havent already done so.

Can't seem to find a place called Plucknel. Could this be a typo?

Hi Anthony,

I don't know if this is straightforward or not, but I was hoping to get some casualty numbers for the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers, i.e. total casualties over set periods of time.

1. 1st Oct 1915 - 8th Jan 1916 ('quiet phase' of Gallipoli)

2. 20th Mar 1916 - 30th June 1916 (the Somme, calm before the storm)

3. 1st - 3rd July 1916 (the storm)

4. 1st Aug 1916 - 8th Dec 1916 (alternating between reserve, support and front line)

I have only used SDGW once and that was a while ago - I can't remember what the search facility was like. If this request is too complicated or will take up too much of your time let me know.

Thanks,

Stuart

Hi Anthony,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

It always amazes me how high casualty numbers were when no major engagements were taking place at the time. It's quite often described as normal frontline 'wastage' - a word that I always find distasteful in this context.

The 44 casualties at Gallipoli occurred during the "comparatively uneventful last three months of the Dardanelles campaign" (Oct, Nov & Dec 1915 were covered in two pages in 'The KOSB in the Great War', Capt. Stair Gillon).

Cheers,

Stuart

Anthony,

I have tried to find details of an H Harvey and a C Wood whose names are on the Village War Memorial ( Whitwell, Derbyshire) , I have searched the C.W.G.C. , the local papers and the 1901 Census but without any luck.

The most likely regiment they would have served in would have been the Sherwood Foresters I looked on the data base that Cliff. Housley set up at the Nottingham Foresters museum but a great many are not on there. I f you have any suggestions where to go to next it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Cliff.

Cliff,

Just a thought but there is a 10638 Pte Joseph Wood 6th Lincolnshires listed on SDGW who was born and lived Whitwell, Enlisted Worksop. He was KIA 09/08/15.

Could the Memorial be wrong?

There are 2 H Harvey's in the Foresters.

1) 21923 Harold Harvey 1st Bn, Born Starton, Derbs, Enlisted Buxton, Residence Rowsley, Derbs (bit too far away from Whitwell i think!!)

2)1399 Harry Harvey 1/5th KIA 26/06/15, Born and Enlisted Derby

Whitwell is only down the road!
