"Lt. Kuhr".

If - and it is a big if - he was already a Leutnant in 1914, this photo was taken in the Ukraine (Galicia) before 15/16th September 1916, the day Lt. Kuhr was KIA at Swistelniki (Svitanok near Narajiwka). The hut in the background looks typically for this part of Galicia. He was with 3rd Coy RIR 3 at the time, having been part of IR 146 at the outbreak of the war. The regimental history calls the 16th Sept. 1916 the worst day of the regimentยดs time on the eastern front. They had to withdraw from their positions after massiv attacs by the Russians and lost 5 officers and 76 NCOs and other ranks KIA, 7 officers and 107 other soldiers WIA and 13 officers and 1455 other men MIA. At the end of the day not much more than 200 soldiers were left in the regimentยดs positions.

Accepting the big 'If', the presence of so many steel helmets in this one might be seen as a little odd for mid-September 1916. On the Somme, the IR 63, one of the first units to get these, apparently, only got them in August 1916. Not impossible they were in Galicia by mid-September 1916, but worth bearing in mind.

Thanks GreyC. I guess - and hope! - that somewhere in the bowels of the archives there is a document recording this. I have always relied on post-war regimental accounts to determine the date individual units received e.g., helmets and Gew.98...

GWF1967 great photo. Donโ€™t often see the rolled epaulets. Very young looking machine gunners here. ย The main point of this image is the larger pattern barrel carrier to the left. 4 barrels.
