@Mark

this is an outstandingly good and interesting thread - thanks.

Two photographies, taken by my grandfather in Oct. or Nov. 2016 when he went through his officer training course at the "Heeresschule" (Army School) Döberitz. MG instructor was Oberleutnant Paul. Fähnrich Homeyer is aiming through the ZF 12 scope.

Henry the German - superb photos, thanks for sharing. What is of ‘technical’ interest are the ammo belts, and BFA. They are not live firing, and it looks like they are using wooden training rounds with spacing on the belt. Ie leaving gaps for bursts or instruction between firing. A common practice to remove rounds in any Army.
so with the blank firing attachment or shredder, one must assume there was some form of target (close) being observed by use of the ZF, again for trading purposes.
great image and you must be very proud.

Some stunning pictures and knowledge here! Would anybody happen to know what the shoulderboards of an mg sharpshooters tunic would have looked like (field grey with white piping and red numerals?)?

A more detailed answer to follow but the same applied to British machine gunners - remain as anonymous as possible in the event of capture!
