Hi Anthony,

Thank you for your quick reponse. I now have to go away and work out what it all means.

Yes, David Callander is also given on the CWGC site as 9th battalion, but on a local Roll of Honour it says 7th. The 9th Royal Scots were at the Western Front from about May 1915. Maybe he was attached, but haven't came across any evidence.

Thanks for the moment. I may be back......

Anthony,

thank you for your speedy reply. i have been interested in tracing my grandads brothers for years and your info certainly helps with the place of birth being the same. I am having difficulty finding info as they were actually born as 'Wollastons'

A search sometime ago on the CWGC confirmed William as one brother but i am only 90% sure that I have the correct George. the CWGC shows 15 G GRAINGER's which i have looked at, eliminating some through next of kin details. Could I impose on your good nature to check the following possibles and give me whatever details you have on them please which could help me confirm/deny my findings so far;

G GRAINGER 89825 Royal Engineers.

G GRAINGER MM 6595 Royal Engineers.

G GRAINGER 43095 Northamptonshire Regiment.

G F GRAINGER 930783 RFA

G George H GRAINGER 28332 East Yorks Regiment

George Henry GRAINGER 20773 Hampshire Regiment.

G W GRAINGER 31385 Sherwood Foresters, Nott & Derby

Pushing my luck even further, is the original George you searched for me shown as 'George' on your SDGW or 'G' as it is on the CWGC.

thanking you for your help which is assisting my quest,

Regards,

scottie.

If anyone wants a look up just post here.

Cheers

Anthony,

Would you kindly look up an Australian just to see if they are on it before I buy the whole caboose, please?

Anthony,

to say that "hope this helps" is a bit of an understatement and this information really narrows down my search and suggests by process of elimination that Driver George Grainger 25089 is my Grandads brother, thank you very much for your help.

I have visited his grave in France several times to pay my respects but I have always had a niggling doubt that it was not the correct grave, but it appears to be the right one after all.

I will now attempt to see if his and William's records survived and are somewhere in the 'burnt records'.

thank you again very much for your help, hopefully some time in the forum i can repay your help,

regards,

Scottie (excited of Hertford!)

Anthony,

In my research into the 23rd London I came across this individual with an interesting name:

Septimus Harry Archibald Richard Percy Sharp (S.H.A.R.P. Sharp)

718276 L/Cpl. 1/23rd London Regiment

14/08/1918.

I'd be grateful if you could provide me with all his details.

His parents must have had fun naming him.

Regards,

Matthew

Anthony,

Thank you very much for those details.

I'd love to find his medals and plaque and have a photo of his gravesite. I wonder whether officialdom actually put his full entitlement on them or just cut it off at "S.H."

He should be fairly easy to find in the census, don't you think. ;)

Matthew

Matthew,

The online MICs show his name as Septimus H and there is an earlier number of 6227.

Well, I checked him up on the 1901 and 1891 census. He had four siblings with the names of Thomas, Edith, Edwin and Frederick, mother Fanny and father William. (A brewer's labourer) He was the second son but there was no indication why they came up with such a fabulous set of name.

Guest SIMON296th

Hi Anthony

I am in the very early stages of researching my Great Grandfather & would greatly appreciate any information you could find for me.

His details are as follows:

Gunner JOHN BROWN (I know, not too unique)

S/N: 213252

296th Siege Battery RGA

Died: 13.05.1919

Many thanks for your time.

Regards

Simon.

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum!!

Unfortunately, nothing can be found on your Great Grandfather. SDGW isn't too clever on dates post 1918!

Apologies

Many thanks for your kind (and quick!) service anyway Anthony.

Would the SDGW be able to search for members of the 296th Siege Battery?? Maybe their information may point me a little further towards finding some more information on my Great Grandfather. Details abouth the 296th are very scant indeed.

Once again, many thanks & keep up the good work!

Simon.
