 Sorry jim...couldn't resist having a look! See it comes from the disappointment of not being able to find my Gt Grandads records...and I just cannot give up looking for his, so its nice to look and find a name that is actually there!

Thanks anyway both of you! The date of birth seems wrong so no luck there. In case his death is mentioned anywhere, my man died 6th Dec 1945.

Much appreciated, Mark

Hi,

Would someone mind checking if ancestry pension records has a William Vaughan from Co. Meath, Ireland.

Royal Engineers service number should be 22878. Enlisted in 1912 and service discontinued in 1917. I presume he was pensioned off at that stage.

Thanks

Mark

Thanks Doug,

Would someone mind checking:

64406 Winterton, William Royal Garrison Artillery

I am really only interested in his attestation, enlistment date, where enlisted, and ideas of his carrer as my Granddad was RGA No. 64278 and I want to find the closest person possible to him on Ancestry to get an idea of his careerpath which should have, at least, started the same.

Thanks

Mark

later on in the war consecutive numbers (at least in the coldstream) didnt mean you enlisted at the same time

I would be most grateful if anyone can check for my granfather

Robert Jagger, Machine Gun Corps, Pte No.99006.

He was gassed and survived but apart from his medal index card I have never turned up anything else.

Thanks

Fred

Hi Fred,

He is not in the pension records. He may be in the service records but they are only available for A-C at the moment.

Thanks Doug

My own grandfather's service had been illusive since I started.

I know he existed since my mum and I are here ;)

Much appreciate you looking

Kind regards

Fred

I have just read through the whole of this thread in the hope that I could pick up some tips on looking for, not just an individual, but to fill in the gaps in my battalion database.

I note that those doing similar studies have found many men who enlisted early in the war and were subsequently discharged without serving overseas and in many cases, not applying for a Silver War Badge.

What is the best way to search in order to find the men of a single battalion?

I saw that some contributors resorted to PM to discuss these issues - care to let me in on the secrets?

Thanks,

Ken

Doug

As your man was an officer his papers are not likely to be found in the online pension or service records.

Another way to do it is to refine your search and type in the regiment name only. That brings up all men listed from that regiment in alphabetical order. Much quicker than trawling through hundreds of names.
