Michael Lowrey Posted 24 April Share Posted 24 April Karl Neumann, born December 14, 1891, entered service October 1911, Leutnant zur See der Reserve September 16, 1916 and not to be confused with the well-known U-boat commander of the same name that commanded submarines out of Austria in 1918 (this guy: https://uboat.net/wwi/men/commanders/219.html) The more junior Karl Neumann had a weird career path during the war, attending submarine school and then serving as the WO on UB 33 out of Flanders in 1917 and getting off that boat just before it was sunk, then on Schwaben, before coming to Goeben in September or October 1918 to the end of the war. Out of service January 16, 1919. German decoration in early 1918 is just the EK2. Also likely to have gotten a U-boat War Badge at a later date. Glenn J Posted 25 April Share Posted 25 April (edited) 7 hours ago, Michael Lowrey said: Torpeder-Leutnant likely in late 1914, Obertorpeder Konrad Neid was commissioned on 20 May 1914. The 1914 naval Rangliste was effective as at 12 May, so he just missed being included in that as a commissioned officer. On being assigned to the Sonderkommando, he was granted the Ottoman army rank of a 1st Lieutenant. His rank on transfer to official status was that of a Marine-Ingenieur. He returned to active officer status in thirties. The 1936 naval list shows him as a Korvettenkapitän (W), (1.10.35) on the staff of the fortress commander Wilhelmshaven. He was promoted to Kapitän zur See (W) on 1.4.40. Died 8 August 1964. Regards Glenn Edited 25 April by Glenn J

emrezmen Posted 25 April Share Posted 25 April (edited) Photo of the officer I believe is Natz (on the right). It was taken at Fort Hamidiye one or two days after 18 March. Location, his rank (Turkish 1st Lt.) and the heavy artillery badge on his collar give a clue as to his identity. On the left is a captain, probably Herschel. As a side note, Nitzsche's transfer from the Dardanelles to Istanbul and later Germany was prompted by a dispute with a Turkish artillery officer. During a firing practice in November 1916, Nitzsche allegedly asked the officer, an experienced captain in heavy artillery, "Can you shoot?" The Turkish captain took offence to this kind of question and reacted strongly. Following the captain's protest and subsequent discussions at the higher command level, Nitzsche was reassigned elsewhere. Of course, Nitzsche is one of the Germans I've been desperately trying to find a picture of.
