yes, same Baltzer and thank you for posting that. It is always extremely useful to have the ranks in the original German to avoid any confusion!

Kapitänleutnant (20.8.17) Hermann Baltzer, born 9 October 1888 at Chemnitz. Entered the navy in 1907 (Crew 1907) and his pre-war service was aboard the Wettin and the Thüringen. He was ill in 1914 and on sick leave in Switzerland until June1915 when he was assigned to the staff of Reichs Naval Office. In October 1917, he was assigned to the holding section of the Euphrates detachment in Constantinople. At the same time he was also a watch officer on S.M.S. Goeben. Assigned as the admiral's staff officer (ASTO) of the Mittelmeer-Division with additional duties as the transport officer in January 1918. Retired 24 November 1914 Recalled in WW2 as an Abwehr (intelligence officer) serving in the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht dealing with Italian, Spanish and Portuguese matters. In 43/44 he was assigned to the embassy in Madrid and finally as a liaison officer of the Abwehr in Italy, British prisoner of war until 1946. Final rank: Fregattenkapitän der Reserve. Max Ballas was born on March 9, 1886 was promoted to Marine-Stabarzt on May 24, 1916. Marine-Stabarzt is the medical officer equivalent of a Kapitänleutnant. He started the war on Prinzregent Luitpold but transfer to Breslau in April 1916 and remains there until October 1916. He’s then in Kiel except for some time on the light cruiser Cöln.

Thanks again nice one

Looking at Wigeon's list I can identify most of these, but not all?

These men were on Staff (Stab) to the Admerial Rebeur-Paschwitz of the MMD, and as such most were with him on his last ride on Goeben, when he sallied the Fleet in Jan 1918, which cost the lives of so many of his Germans when the Breslau was sunk

We'll start with the,

Just in case this might be useful these are the pages from the same document I posted up-thread which were omitted from the original post. There is also other editions of similar lists, ORBATS, reports from aircraft flights naming aircrew, etc in the records, let me know if you want anything looked up.T1022-0808-00798resize.jpg.c970e671b81af31d1aeb9dadcb7d6d66.jpgT1022-0808-00799resize.jpg.f4be245bd2fb7649f7eaa65f31e9d9e7.jpgT1022-0808-00800resized.jpg.9f0cbc017617af5f78950f843036bd57.jpgT1022-0808-00802resize.jpg.b86398824707ea614dd0a511506e73f1.jpg

Marine-Baurat (28.4.17) Friedrich Schneider, born 6 May 1881 in Bremen. A naval construction official (ship building career) with the equivalent rank of a Korvettenkapitän. Unlike most military and naval officials, the higher career officials in naval construction had definite comparative rank to line officers. Appointed a Marine-Baumeister (Kapitänleutnant) on 30 September 1909, he was in 1914 assigned to the naval dockyards at Wilhelmshaven. He was additionally employed as an instructor at the engineer and deck officer school. He certainly survived the war as he rose to the rank of Marinebaudirektor (Kapitän zur See) in the second.

Hi Steve,

you are conflating two different individuals in your table above;

Kontreadmiral Waldemar Pieper (14.8.1871-24.2.1945) and Technischer Sekretär Erich Pieper (1885-)
The then Kapitän zur See Pieper was the inspector of the arms inspectorate in the Ottoman arms office and held the rank of an Ottoman major general from 3.2.15-30.7.17.

Technischer Sekretär (30.5.14) Erich Pieper was a junior technical official (Subalternbeamte) in the naval administration and as shown in the order of battle supplied by Wigeon was on the staff of the technical department of the Mittelmeerdivision.

Steve,

two guys:

Marineoberbaurat und Betriebsdirektor (29.4.13) Dr. Ing. E.h. Paul Presse, a senior naval construction official in the rank of a Fregattenkapitän. Born 20 January 1868 in Berlin. First appointment as a Bauführer (ship building) effective 25.4.93. He served as the departmental head for naval construction of the Mittelmeerdivision from 28 October 1915 to 7 November 1916. He remained in the Reichsmarine following the war rising to the rank of Ministerialdirektor (Vizeadmiral) on 1 May 1927. He retired on 30 April 1934 and died in Berlin-Wilmersdorf on 27 January 1948.

and

Technischer Sekretär (21.12.09) Hans Prieß, again a junior technical official (Subalternbeamte) in the naval administration on the staff of the technical department of the Mittelmeerdivision. Born 1883, he was additionally a Leutnant der Reserve in Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 85.

Steve,

Not Wagner. Even the chap who typed up the Übersicht above misspelt Max Wegener's name. (Spelt Wegner in the document).

Marine-Baurat Max Wegener, born 1877 entered the naval administration as a machine construction specialist in 1902. At the outbreak of the war, he was a Baumeister (23.7.06) at the naval office in Berlin. Awarded the Charakter as a Baurat (Korvettenkapitän) on 25June 1917. Holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

Re UB 14 Wachoffizier, I can't find one mentioned from Oct 1917 onwards in any of the Ubersicht , personnel records etc on the digitized microfilm. Also no mention found in a cursory check through UB 14's KTB.

Morning Wigeon,

that is very interesting. I must admit, I have not read every telegram in over a 1000 page pdf so well done!

According to the naval Ehrenrangliste, Kurt Brandt was temporarily assigned to coastal defence in Syria in November 1917. However, Oberleutnant zur See Felix Klamroth developed pneumonia in January 1918 and as a consequence saw no further active service during the war. He died of a recurrence of the condition in Gernrode on 22 April 1925.

One assumes the transfer was never put into effect.

Glenn
