I hope they realised 2 fasteners were needed but tricky to handle if flying alone or even double handed with cold hands etc

Sadly no bi-plane, it was not secure enough to drop from any height.  However, I do have documentation that mentions the dropping of map tubes but the details are not mentioned, as per usual in much documentation.

Perhaps information can be found in personal diaries at IWM etc. I'll bear it in mind when researching .

That would be very kind of you.

I am also presuming that when the RAF dropped photographic prints to ground formations during the 100 Days they would have used the map tubes to put them in.
