GreyC Posted 6 September , 2022 Share Posted 6 September , 2022 Might have been in the Rue Gosselin in Lille or the Grand Place with the Intendantur and lots of Cafes at that time. GreyC

It's a shot in the dark -- but as of 1923, there was a Café Gosselin at 9, Place Rihour, Lille: Last page of this document under Damier du Nord

According to Google Streetview, that would make it the same building as the sandwich shop 'Sagood' in the middle here. The paving has been replaced (and the tram tracks torn up) but is still in a similar style... Here's another photo at this location from my collection - another Saxon, this time from IR 104 (40 Inf. Div. / XIX. Armeekorps) earlier in 1915. Lille had a continuous Saxon presence up until July 1916, since XIX.AK was responsible for the capture of the city in October 1914 and subsequently held the Armentières / Ploegsteert front immediately to its west until committed to the Battle of the Somme. Here's another one (of lower quality) which I found online. Saxons again, of course! The neighbouring shop to the left of the Café Gosselin is a bit clearer here. My suspicion is that there was a photographer's studio opposite, though one then wonders why he would not simply use his own shop as the background (for advertising).
