Remembered Today:

War memorial books

Here is a list I’ve compiled over the years of some Great War rolls of honour, many of them (especially the newer ones) are related to names on memorials.

Most of them are Scottish and where I know of a copy in a Scottish library I’ve added that in brackets after the entry:

SGS – Scottish Genealogy Society Library

ML – Mitchell Library, Glasgow

ECL - Edinburgh Central Library

ECL-ER-Edinburgh Room, Edinburgh Central Library

NLS – National Library of Scotland

Unfortunately because this was complied for my own use I’ve not got the details of authors / editors / publishers etc and because some of these entries are taken from library index cards I haven’t actually seen all of them.

Those entries without a library noted after them were probably taken from an article in an old SMHS ‘Dispatch’ journal from a few years ago.

A Village Goes to War - a History of the Men of Ravensthorpe who fell in the Great War by David John Tattersfield. IIRC, the book is based around the names on the WM in Ravensthorpe, West Yorskhire.

While looking for something else, I found this reference in the second edition of the IWM War Memorials Handbook (2001).

A list of recently published rolls of honour books containing biographical details of the names recorded on local war memorials is maintained and updated by James Brazier, editor of the Western Front Association Bulletin. To obtain a copy contact the WFA.

There's also one for the war memorial in Kilrea, Co Londonderry, NI. I cannot remember who wrote it. He died and the book was completed by Robert Thompson and published. It provides more depth of information than would be in some of Robert's own books.

  • 2 months later...

Here are two more from Ireland:

"The Widow's Penny". A record of Limerick men and women who died in the Great War. McNamara, Patrick. The Limerick Leader, 2000. No ISBN number.

"Follow Them up from Carlow". Casualties from Co. Carlow in the Great War. Maguire, Paul, The Leinster Leader, 2002. No ISBN number.

Both were published by local papers, and are available only in local bookshops, I think. However, I have copies of all those listed in my previous post and this one, and could answer any queries about specific names.

I was about to knock this thread back up again.

All those that have been listed and many others I have come across I have now put onto an Excel file - This should be available to any one who wants one in a couple of weeks - It will always be ongoing as I find more - But its a start.

Canadian Book of Remembrance

The Books of Remembrance contain the names of Canadians who fought in wars and died either during or after them. All the books are kept in the Memorial Chamber located in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. The purpose of creating a site that displays these books on the Internet is to make them more accessible to the public. Quite aptly named are these testaments to Canada's past, for by their very title they remind us to never forget the foundations of courage on which Canada is built.

The Maple Leaf Legacy Project

A Project in Remembrance of Canada's War Dead. The aim of the Maple Leaf Legacy Project is to photograph or obtain a photograph of every Canadian War Grave of the 20th Century. These photos will be made freely available on the project's web site. The project relies solely on the kind assistance of the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors around the world to get the photographs or to donate funds to help pay for the good work of the project. The Maple Leaf Legacy Project is a registered charity and can issue charitable tax receipts.

Royal Bank of Canada - Great War Honour Roll

A total of 1,495 Royal Bank staff members enlisted for active service. Of these, 186 were killed in action or died in hospital and five were missing in action. After the war, 786 employees were reinstated, while 516 elected not to return to the bank. In 1920, Royal Bank published a Roll of Honour commemorating those staff members who died or were missing in action - this is the main feature of this site.

Military Memorials in Canada [April 2005]

This site is dedicated to cataloging Military Memorials in Canada and is meant as a supplement to the National Inventory maintained by the Directorate of History and Heritage. There is an excellent section on how to photograph Memorials. At present the site is focussed on Memorials in Ontario and is still being developed. The mix of photos and detailed information for the existing entries is excellent. In the future, sites in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will be added. It is a site well worth visiting and keeping an eye on as it develops.
