Lincspoacher Posted 19 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2016 (edited) After useful insight from forum member TEW about MIC's listing only overseas service I will try to add further details to my table reflecting this if found! From cross checking MIC records I have added 'Extra notes', if 'none' is given then that man may not have served abroard with the tranfer list name or numbers and 'Same' then he had served with a unit at some time with that name/number. Other information given may be a difference in name to that of the transfer list or if the man served abroad with different unit or service number which would indicate another instance of transfer not detailed in the 'daily orders' that I have reproduced here. The sequence of these extra service numbers could help give a date clue to when the man did what and when at other times in his service? TEW Posted 20 August , 2016 Share Posted 20 August , 2016 It's rather frustrating and annoying for you I know but for some odd reason Ancestry do not seem to have indexed some of the medal cards in this number range. For example, from post 27; 28237 Brown. No sign of a MIC with that information. But he does come up in a search for the medal rolls with that info under; 28237 Brown MGC 45414 Brown Cheshire Regt. 28237 Brown MGC You can then search for and find his MIC under 'Brown 45414' which is a bit ridiculous as the 28237 number is the first listed on the MIC and his medals would be issued to Brown 28237 MGC. Why ancestry have not indexed the number his medals were issued to for the MIC but have done for the rolls is annoying but there's no way they'll change that. Try searching the medal rolls for the name and number OR use DISCOVERY search name/number http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_st=adv&_cr1=Wo372&_dss=range&_ps=30&_ro=any&_q=28237+AND+brown You won't have to download anything (or pay) for the search results. If you try the above search for the missing 28245-28254 numbers you may start to find them. EG 28245 MGC is Drummond, S/9768 Argyle & SH, 31661 RE. His MIC is on ancestry under the RE number!! Just use this link and change the MGC number http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_st=adv&_cr1=Wo372&_dss=range&_ps=30&_ro=any&_q=28245+AND+machine TEW

Mary. The medal roll shows he was in a larger group of over twenty men transferred from the KOSB around the same time. These men would have been transferred from the Reserve Battalion of the KOSB into the MGC. After he was wounded his route would most likely have been hospital - Command Depot (convalescent camp) - then a reserve Battalion to await posting. Following the March offensive there was a need to strengthen the MGC ao he would have probably gone to Grantham and received further training before being posted back to France. mysie Posted 26 May , 2017 Share Posted 26 May , 2017 Thanks for that Ken, it was hard without his records but we managed to get most of his 2ND BATT KOSB history, we tried a researcher for the MGC but all he could find that David was in a small group of wounded sent back to the UK. His own family knew nothing about him being moved into the MGC, so you think he may have been sent back to France, i will get my husband to pass that on to his Grandson. We think he came out 1920 as he signed up late 1914 and went to F&F JAN 1915, so he might have came out when the MGC were disbanded then. Thanks again . Mary.

Mary. The MGC was disbanded in 1922. His entry on the 14-15 Star Roll looks like something of an afterthought, unfortunately and his discharge date is not shown. We can't be certain he returned to France but on the balance of probability he did. For example146830 Pullen and 146973 Brown both transferred into the MGC on the 18 April 1918 and went to France on 3 June 1918, there was still a lot of fighting to be done. The numbers bracket Pte Alexander. On the other hand 146987 Griffin has a transfer date of 17 April and went to France on the 15 July. So very difficult to say when Pte Alexander shipped out. mysie Posted 27 May , 2017 Share Posted 27 May , 2017 Thanks again for all that information Ken, his grandson was convinced his grandad had been in India at some stage but his only thing to go on was that he had a Pith Helmet in his house. Well he was not in India pre F&F so if he was ever in India it could only have been when he moved into the MGC.But the 2nd KOSB were in Italy for a short period and my husband was wondering if they might have been issued Pith helmets while there. The only thing with that it was around the time David was wounded for a second time, and we dont even know if he was in Italy. But we are more inclined to go with you that he would have been sent back to France once he had completed MGC at Grantham. Thanks for taking the time to do this for us. Mary. rolt968 Posted 27 May , 2017 Share Posted 27 May , 2017 Have you run across anything about Pte James Gordon, 42331, 96 Company MGC, formerly 3338, 5 Black Watch (Probably originally 3/5 Black Watch.)? He made a witnessed will at Belton Park on 6 July 1916. RM

I don't know if you have access to FMP but the aforementioned Pte Sidney Griffin 146987 re-enlisted on discharge on his return from France on 31/3/1919. He was then posted to India embarking 24/10/1919 where he remained until returning to the UK 3/5/1920 and eventually discharged 31/3/21. On re-engagement he was renumbered 7811743, however this number is not on his Roll entry/mic. Therefore it is quite possible Pte Alexander followed a similar route. I don't think he went to Italy, he would have been taken off the strength of the Battalion when wounded. Ken
mysie Posted 27 May , 2017 Share Posted 27 May , 2017 We drove down to KOSB museum in Berwick, and my husband asked if it was possible that they might have had the Pith Helmets in Italy, but he just laughed and said i dont think so. It is of course possible he may have been given the helmet by a friend, but his Grandson is convinced he had been in Italy. But he just remembers his Grandfather as a sick old man who died at 76 years old,We just assumed it would have been on his Medal card if he had served in India. We are not on FMP Just Scotlands People but will give it a try..Thank you so much for all your help. Admin kenf48 Posted 28 May , 2017 Admin Share Posted 28 May , 2017 I'm conscious we've hijacked this thread but there is no reason for his posting to India to be shown on the medal documentation. Pte Griffin went to India post-armistice and therefore outside the qualification for the medals and as previously noted his seven digit number is not shown on the medal records. If he did re-enlist there is an outside chance his records will be at the MoD see this thread for how to access the index to these records The chronology does not fit with Italy, if wounded at 3rd Ypres he would have been in the UK recovering when the Battalion went to Italy which is why he was transferred to the MGC in April 1918. He would not have been sent back to the UK to transfer to the MGC. Ken
