Lincspoacher Posted 25 July , 2016 Share Posted 25 July , 2016 Hopefully this is the right place for this but I found an interesting list while searching for details of the Machine gun corps. Part of the 'Daily Orders List' issued at Grantham on the 10.3.1916 that details new transfers with their old/new service number, former unit and the new company to which they are to be assigned with ranks too! I have been trying to post a copy here but I will work on transcripts of the list in the hope I could find the list I am looking for in the future? I will try to make the best copy I can but the original is damaged in places so have tried to complete from other sources! Transfers to 47th Coy MGC to be ineffect from 26.2.1916 New number: 13439 Name: Pte A. Tyler Former unit and number: 14th Rifle Bde 14328 13440 L/Cpl F. Gardiner 10th Border Reg 21653 13441 Pte W. I have just had a good look around but I haven't seen any of your family mentioned yet but I will post details if I do. I have the same problem with my Great grandfathers war service in that I know which regiment he was at the end but not where he started! Lincspoacher Posted 17 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 17 August , 2016 Hello Sajackr I don't have a list with your Great grandfather on but I have done some maths and looking around so may have something for you? Based on other records he may have served with the 8th Somerset LI (when comparing his number to others) with a transfer to the 68th MGC with group of around 10 men from his old unit about January 1916. After the MG training the company went to France in March 1916 to join 68th Brigade, 23rd Division before the German offensive on Vimy ridge in May. Not sure if any of my ideas make any sense to you as mainly guess work? Lincspoacher

TEW Posted 18 August , 2016 Share Posted 18 August , 2016 Impressive lists that will help make sense of the MGC! I have also stumbled across other MGC lists, not sure if you want those as well? They are lists of deaths of MGC men which give - name, rank, MGC number, how died/date, place of enlistment and former number/unit. Here's one to look at. Could post more if you wanted to take this on? Incidentally, some of the MIC cross-referencing is causing you trouble: EG 28219 Pte G. Sutton 20463 (MIC notes as J.Millward?) Sutton's MIC is here on ancestry, shows he served in a theatre of war (in order) - MGC 28219; Cheshire Regt 52025; ASC M-377162. His former number of 20463 with the Cheshires doesn't show as he did not serve abroad with this number. Millward's MIC shows only 20463 Cheshires, presumably the same number could be used across different battalions. Same could apply to 28221 Pte J. Williams 30231 (MIC notes as J.T.Smith?) Still a valuable resource for original, pre-transfer regiments and numbers for men where this info is otherwise lost ie no service record and service not indicated by medal information. Lincspoacher Posted 18 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 18 August , 2016 Hello thank you for your advice TEW I am fairly new to this and didn't know about the detail that a MIC shows numbers where overseas service happened but not home service! I listed these for the reason you mentioned that they help fill in missing details of soldier's service much as with the reason I found them when I was searching for traces of my Great grandfathers ww1 activities. I couldn't access the link you gave for the details of deaths in the MGC with their prior service but I would welcome your help by adding to this potentual database of lost references anything that you think may help in the area you mentioned, with thanks Lincspoacher
TEW Posted 18 August , 2016 Share Posted 18 August , 2016 Sorry, I assumed you had FMP subscription as I thought I found your list on there that you started in post#15. Anyway, back to 28221 Pte J. Williams 30231 (MIC notes as J.T.Smith?) I couldn't find his MIC on ancestry but it is indexed at TNA and shows his overseas service as 28221 MGC; 45421 Cheshires. Looks like both Sutton and Williams reverted to the Cheshire Regiment after a stint in the MGC. TEW
Lincspoacher Posted 19 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2016 I have been a member in the past but only usually take advantage of the free weekends! I have seen a few discrepencies with this series and the Cheshires like only surnames or big differences in service numbers like the clerk was having problems some how? There could be lot of movement in units as I found that the 17th were originally a reserve for the 15th and 16th 'Bantam' battalions?
