neverforget Posted 20 January , 2016 Share Posted 20 January , 2016 Here's a fine body of British men. Curious uniform. Who can they be ? ? ? Well you know that uniforms are not my strong point to say the least, but I'll take a shot with Military Police?
Ron Clifton Posted 20 January , 2016 Share Posted 20 January , 2016 The cap badge looks like one of the Light Infantry regiments. The cuff rings are definitely non-standard for British troops. Members of one of the Volunteers regiments, perhaps? The war-formed version, not the Victorian version which became the TF. Ron

Ron No. This was a non-combatant corps (but not the Non-Combatant Corps), which did not serve overseas.

Uncle George Posted 21 January , 2016 Share Posted 21 January , 2016 A Railway Ambulance Corps? It was an Ambulance Corps, yes. But nothing to do with the Railways. It was raised by an Assurance company. Which company did not just raise an Ambulance Corps: here's the company's "Ladies' Red Cross Detachment". Who ARE we talking about ? ? ? Uncle George Posted 21 January , 2016 Share Posted 21 January , 2016 Uncle, is it the Prudential? Pete. Yes! Well done Pete. The Prudential Ambulance Corps: "The Ambulance Corps belonging to the main office in Holborn is on the spot and ready when the wounded arrive at the London stations from the front. A wire brings the whole corps away from the desks, and takes them off hot-foot to meet the trains. Here the smitten men are handled with every care that trained and gentle women and men can give. The wounded are moved to vehicles, driven off to hospitals ... With them always until they see them safely housed or safely entrained go the workers of the Prudential Ambulance Corps. "They are untiring, no matter how early or late the hour they have been summoned. And when their sympathetic task is done, they go home to rest? Not a bit of it. They go back to their desks, and they finish the work the coming of the wounded interrupted ... Fattyowls Posted 21 January , 2016 Share Posted 21 January , 2016 The Prudential Ambulance Corps Good one uncle. I have to admit I only got it because of the architecture behind the assembled Red Cross ladies; the headquarters of the Pru and indeed its Liverpool branch were done in the neo-gothic style and it was the windows what done it. The detail looked like Alfred Waterhouse's style, however having looked at some photos of the building I can't see a match. Pete.

Fattyowls Posted 21 January , 2016 Share Posted 21 January , 2016 Blimey Pete that's impressive detective work! I reckon that it was more luck than judgement. I used to work for an insurance company and am still familiar with the competition. It's also the first time my A level History of Art has come in useful, it's only been 40 years since I took it.
