inkerman Posted 28 October , 2013 Share Posted 28 October , 2013 Dear All I was the Training Major of 7 LI, the Durham TA Battalion when this gun arrived at Beamish. It had been captured during WW1 and displayed in Sheffield as a war trophy during that war. Later, the Sheffield authorities decided to dispose of it and it was dumped in a sewage pit. In the mid seventies it was decided to dredge the pit and despite the warnings of the oldest employee 'there is a german gun in that pit' excavations went ahead - only to come to a dead stop when they hit the gun itself. I do not know what negotiations there were between the authorities in Sheffield and Beamish Museum but sometime in the late 1970s the gun was installed at Beamish with suitable military ceremony. Hooge 1915 was the premier battle honour of the 2nd Battalion DLI and was celebrated as Hooge Day until the 2nd Bn was disbanded Richard

28juni14 Posted 11 November , 2015 Share Posted 11 November , 2015 This is an old topic that I just happened upon. I can tell you the Rohrwagen displayed in Prairie du Rocher (field by the rock) Is of Krupp manufacture. It was manufactured in late 1918. The wooden spoked wheels do not alter this fact. Acute shortages of almost everything late in the war forced the use of wood rather than steel. Further the jacket sweated on the Rheinmetal version is noticeably larger in circumference than the Krupp version, and would not have fit on the Krupp rohrwagen..
