Cotswold Posted 24 November , 2005 Share Posted 24 November , 2005 Donna Im staying at Bernafay wood on Monday for 3 nights !!!!! Kev <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ha ha, The owners of the B&B at Bernafay are lovely and the accommodation is very good. The fact that my partner jumped out on me at every opportunity and told stories about orbs etc couldn't of helped my nerves much. However, I did hear furniture move during the early hours of the morning but just assumed it was him being silly AGAIN! I also felt as if I was being watched from the woods (Squirrels maybe) and just had this feeling of dread each time we returned home at night. I know woods can seem a bit creepy sometimes but I certainly felt unwelcome there. As for Mametz, I love it there and have never had a bad feeling. The only other place that I have felt uncomfortable is Polygon Wood. Anyhow Kev, I really hope you enjoy your stay The Somme is a lovely area. Best Wishes, Donna. peterhogg Posted 3 November , 2012 Share Posted 3 November , 2012 I wonder too! I had some weird experiences when I stayed at Bernafay a few years back.. I posted the story on the strange experiences thread. I was there alone and just lost of noises etc.. Who knows? Mind you, It's in a wood after all so probably all explainable. Too be frank, I was usually so tired at the end of the day I didn't really care that much. The true jolt I once received was in Delville Wood in the early morning hours when I saw strange, menacing, figures moving swiftly at the end of one of the rides in the moonlight---those creepy little deer! I think they do that on purpose. I swear I heard deer laughter.....
dedesomme Posted 3 November , 2012 Share Posted 3 November , 2012 Hi. A ghost story on the Somme battlefield. I am French and I try to tell it in English as good as possible. I'm working in the South African Museum in Delville Wood. About three years ago, a tuesday, a couple of British with their daughter about 4 years old, visits the Museum. The lady says to me that they came the day before but as the Museum was closed (weekly closure), they had walked in the paths of the wood. While they walked, their daughter says to them : "there are men in the wood"! Repeatedly. The parents see nothing but the girl insists. Her mother asks her : " how they are ". The girl answers: " as trees ". And the parents see nothing. They leave the wood and Longueval to go to Albert to visit the Musée des Abris under the Basilica. And, in front of a showcase, the girl points the mannequin of a Tommy and said to her parents : "the men in the Wood". The lady said to me that the comparison with trees is probably connected to the color of trunks. I said to them that they had been lucky to meet British or South African ghosts and not Germans ! Since then, I observe a little more attentively the depths of the wood, but I saw only roe deers.

Peter and Ellen Posted 3 November , 2012 Share Posted 3 November , 2012 Had a Tour Guest out with me, Scottish born, who grabbed my arm whilst we were viewing Serre Road No. 2 Cemetery and she told me that she could see a soldier sitting on the steps, just to the left of the Remembrance Stone (when viewed from the roadway). She said the soldier looked grubby and was sitting looking towards the ground with his head in his hands. I had a full load of Tour Guests and as such, we had to get going (to keep the tour schedule). There was some doubt in my mind but this woman's ability to "read" the battlefields was outstanding. Then, when we went to Fromelles the next day, she said that she saw two soldiers, and continued to "read" the battlefields. I tried to keep an "open mind" but her "readings" were unbelievably precise. I will never forget our time at Fromelles on that day. I cannot wait until she returns so that we may spend time at Fromelles and then Bullecourt. Next time, it will be just herself, her husband, myself and someone to make notes. WilliamRev Posted 4 November , 2012 Share Posted 4 November , 2012 Hi Ellen I think that you will find the Western Front fascinating, sad, exciting, depressing and all sorts of other feelings all at once. I presume that you are a young person, and I wish you luck as you explore a future career in history/archeology. There is nothing wrong with listening to ghost stories of the WF, and finding out if you feel the same spookiness when you go to such places as High Wood, Mametz Wood, Sanctuary Wood etc., but the real reward comes through reading and learning as much as you can about WW1, and understanding what went on and where, and then when you go there events make sense.
