Hi everyone.

This might be a dead end thread but hopefully we can find something. This is a photograph of William Hiscock. He is the brother of Charles Hiscock (Different thread) There are family stories of both brothers going off to fight. William met his wife Jennie when she nursed him when he was wounded. I can't find anything abouth his ww1 service. But here is all the information i know about him.

Born in 1892 in Blaina, Monmouthshire

His father was Charles and his Mother was Rachel.

He married Jennie Jones  in 1919 (maybe 22nd September) in Colwyn, Denbighshire

He died in 1962

(Also known as William Henry Gerard Hiscock) this was on his wedding certificate Screenshot_20240324_163313_Gallery.jpg.943e1f6154513a800a3da40fe5765fa4.jpg

This rather looks like his parents' marriage

Surname  First name(s)    District  Vol  Page

Marriages Dec 1888   (>99%)

HISCOCK  Charles    Bedwelty  11a 118
Jones  Rachel    Bedwelty  11a 118

Is that right???

I was wondering if he served under his mother's maiden name ... but JONES is not the most specific combination of surname to try with William! :D

Yes that is right. Any ideas on where to start?

I'm not sure if he would have served under jones as in the 1911 census he was a hiscock but I will try

Unfortunately I can't access this. I don't have a fold3 subscription. A question I have is that is the place of residence when the pension was started if so Will lived out in Colwyn Bay after the war. @Matlock1418?

I don't have full access to Fold3 but from WFA can see that on discharge this soldier claimed for Ankylosis Rt Elbow

and lived at 1 Brynmar, Llysfaen, Conway

later [say 1920-] at 3 Bronhwylfa, Llysaen, Colwyn Bay and 3 Tanrallt Ter, Mochdre, Colwyn Bay

[He also has two MIC]

I don't know if those addresses help, one way or the other???

You may be going down a rabbit hole here, but that man's Medal roll shows this service

You seem to be making rabbit holes for yourself. In the 1911 census he is under his birth name William Hiscock and is with his parents

Why do you think he might have enlisted as Jones? Often/usually there is no logic to the alias a man would use.

  • So why do you think he enlisted
  • why do you think he might have served as Jones

where did you find that?!

I have put it on the cutting - its on Fmp Newspapers from Western Mail Dec 1917

The problem is that although it indicates that he served, it does not give any details of the name he used, nor the regiment. But it does indicate that there should be medals and a MIC

Good spot there!  We have a handful of Welsh Battalions in Salonica. 1 and 11 Welsh, 7th and 8th South Wales Borderers,  11 RWF.  There are more of course.

One option is 54423 4th Bn KRRC. -  A Salonica unit until June 1918 when they reorganised and  1/4 of the Infantry Battalions went to France.

Another is 15660 -  7th SWB.  A Salonica unit

One for the OP:

As family legend has him wounded it might be worth the OP trawling through these 79 pages.  All Hiscocks returned from a wounded search.  His home town should be mentioned  after name and number which may be the clincher.  A couple of hours work perhaps but worthwhile.  When you open each file click on the medium image tab on the left to receive a better readable copy.

I think we can conclude that William was almost certainly serving under his own name

#15660 Swb is certainly an interesting option

  • 1915 Sep 5 Landed France with 7th SWB (medal roll).
  • 7th SWB Landed at Boulogne on 6 September 1915 but sailed at Marseilles on 10 October for service in Salonika.
  • 1919 May 8 Class z discharge (medal roll)
  • 1919 Sep 22 your man married

You are going to have to do a lot more work to be "sure":)

At the moment, I think the "balance of probability" is that he served under his own name, from the newspaper cuttings that refer to him as William Hiscock, brother of Charles

William #15660 on Medal Rolls on Ancestry - click

And this man served in Salonica as in newspaper article. It does not prove anything, but the known facts show that this man is worth pursuing
