christine liava'a Posted 13 June , 2003 Share Posted 13 June , 2003 Recently the St John's branch of the NZ society of Genealogists issued a CD of all the soldiers who joined the NZEF in WW1. It is called New Zealand WW1 service personnel and reserves index. It includes all the names in the Nominal rolls, the Reserve. NZers who served in the AIF, Military defaulters, Native Reserve NZers who served in the RNVR, Nzers who served in Allied forces - about 283,000 records -almost the entire male population of NZ at the time I would be willing to do lookups

Mark Hone Posted 13 June , 2003 Share Posted 13 June , 2003 Dear Christine, I have one look up if you would be so kind. He was Richard Norris Wild of the Auckland Battalion. Originally an accountant from Bury and former pupil of Bury Grammar School who served in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers before emigrating to NZ. He died at Gallipoli in May 1915 and is buried (coincidentally or not, I'd love to be able to find out) at Lancashire Landing Cemetery. Jacky Platteeuw Posted 13 June , 2003 Share Posted 13 June , 2003 Dear Christine, Due to a computer crash, were I lost most of my data, I haven't been able to contact you again to thank you for the information about the Bell family. By this mail I formally do so. I can assure the DF that Christine will be a great asset for this forum. About a year ago I placed a question on a DF concerning a Captain Bell, an most intriguing man, and within hours I had enough material to go on for a long time. Amongst those answers the one from Christine was very extensive: 13 pages of extremely interesting facts. In the mean time I started to research the Menin Gate in depth and found out that a few other NZ's fought in Commonwealth Regiments and are commemorated on the Menin Gate. So I think, Christine, I will gladly accept your offer to do look ups . Jacky

Jacky Platteeuw Posted 13 June , 2003 Share Posted 13 June , 2003 Many thanks Christine. In the mean time I have looked trough my notes and there are 86 soldiers commemorated on the Menin Gate who had some kind of relation with New Zealand. If the list interest you I will send it trough normal email. A little bit long to put on this forum and I saw for the previous posting that the panel numbers have been 'encrypted' so to speak Jacky
christine liava'a Posted 13 June , 2003 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2003 This may sound as a strange question, but is it possible to check if any soldiers born in Holland or with next of kind in Holland are mentioned on the CD No. The search possibilities are surname, given name, occupation, and name of nok. You would need a name. I did searches under "Van *", and "Johannes" but did not come up with any Dutch relatives. In fact there were hardly any Dutch people in NZ at this time. Migration to NZ from Holland was mainly after WW2
Andrew P Posted 24 December , 2003 Share Posted 24 December , 2003 Hi Christine I never saw this thread before, but thanks to the link from the page on the Maori Battalion. I have the details of a New Zealand soldier who I am pretty sure lived in Fremantle WA before WW1. This is all I have on him. No.43022 Gunner A Bower NZEF. Would that CD you have be able to provide any more info? Thanks & Merry Christmas Andrew

Migration to NZ from Holland was mainly after WW2 I think I read of a New Zealander named De Boo. At the time I knew some Dutch people with the name, so it stuck in my mind. Of course, my memory may be faulty as this was fifteen or twenty years ago. If he was not a New Zealander he was Australian. Definately an ANZAC ( note capitals ) Any De Boo's listed Christine? I knew that De Boo was a Dutch name, and thought that there was a chance that he could have been one of the Dutchmen that the new Pal was looking for. Looks as if that branch of the De Boo's were at least a generation away from Holland though. Do you have anything on a Victor Bannerman of the 7th Bn AIF. He was a New Zealander serving in the Australian Army. I have his early war identity disc, the type tha gives the next of kin on the reverse. His NOK was his mother of Alfred Street, Woolwich, Sydney. He died of wounds in Belgium in late 1917 and his civilian occupation was a Student. I think that he sent his disc home when issued with the pair of green/red discs in November 1916. Some of his family probably returned to New Zealand as I was sent the disc I have from New Zealand about 25 or 30 years ago.

Derek Robertson Posted 8 July , 2004 Share Posted 8 July , 2004 Christine, Would it be possible for you to look up 2 of my research "escapees" who I can't trace through the CWGC? The first is JOHN HOGG, the son of Alexander Hogg of Todshawhaugh, Roberton, Hawick who died aged 28 years. The Roberton War Memorial lists John as having served in the 7th New Zealand Regiment. There are only 2 John Hoggs listed on the CWGC and neither has the correct name for his father. The second is JOHN SMITH who is reported in a local newspaper to have died of wounds on 22nd June, 1917 in France. There is no match on the CWGC site for this date though there are 7 John Smiths in total. The only family connection that I can find is that John was the grandson of the late James Smith of Harewood Mill, Rulewater, Hawick. I have no further details I'm afraid. Thanks for any help you can give me.
