SS 502 Games for use Physical Training tables and training in Bombing

This one brought a rueful smile, I can still recall vividly participating in identical exercises whilst undergoing 2-years as a boy soldier, with APTI NCOs harrying us in their red and black hooped woollen jumpers.  I could never forget those heavy wooden “Indian Clubs” (we had no idea back then why they were called that!) and substantial, thick leather “medicine balls”, leather topped sectional wooden horses, and long wooden forms that could be locked together.

The mass conscription of men on unprecedented scales during WW1 lent impetus to the considered development of many such pamphlets organising the massed training of larger groups of men.  It led to a culture whereby outdoor exercise was always preferred whenever possible and that it was always possible to improvise things like deadweights and obstacles.  Thank you for posting!

Glad to help.  There is a copy of the 1918 publication Notes on Gunnery that is bound within the Artillery Summaries that also gives quite a good summary of this and other processes.  Its available at https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C3410867.  The Imperial War Museum also holds a copy of Ranging on the Line of Observation 40/W.O./2778, which is also SS 511. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1500021678 Unfortunately it has not been uploaded for public access.
