David26 Posted 6 July , 2021 Share Posted 6 July , 2021 Diane, thank you so much for this excellent transcription. The latest list has three members of 58 Bde RFA who are of paricular interest to me. Two were previously unknown (Cpl F Bird and Dvr W Meader) and I will do some digging to see if there is anything else I can uncover on them. The third is William John Norris Simmons. He was born in 1884 and was a postman in Hastings, Sussex before the war. He enlisted into 3/2 Home Counties Bde RFA(T) in 1916 before being posted to 11 DAC in April 1917 and then to C/58. By happy coincidence his MH106 survives. I don't have access to the actual document, but the stub available on the TNA website has him as W John Norris Summons and has the following summary about him: Age: 33. Hospital(s): Military Hospital, Eastbourne; Royal Artillery and Tank Corps Command Depot, Catterick. Condition/Injury/Disease: ICT [Inflammation of Connective Tissue] of Leg. Details and Outcome: Patient admitted suffering with ICT of the leg. Arrived at Catterick Command Depot 12 April 1918. Further details given. Recommended for Draft. Outcome not stated. Civil occupation - Postman. Includes a medical case sheet only. Number of Pages: 1. Date: 1917 Dec 19 - 1918 Aug 30. By a further happy coincidence, his service record also survives, which shows that after recuperating he was posted to 104 Bty in Italy in late 1918. He died in St.Leonards, Sussex in 1941, aged 56. Kind regards, David.
David26 Posted 6 July , 2021 Share Posted 6 July , 2021 It turns out that William Meader's service record also survives. He was a pre-war regular who joined the Reserve on 1 Nov 1913 so was mobilised on 5 Aug 1914 and went to France with 26 Bde RFA 11 days later. He was born in 1885, worked as a blacksmith before enlisting, and died in Bethnal Green, London in 1944. David.
Bardess Posted 7 July , 2021 Author Share Posted 7 July , 2021 David, it means a lot when info from these registers are picked up by researchers/relatives. Thanks for the extra details. The next page will be the last one of this complete register - starting on 3/12/17 and, hopefully, all passengers enjoyed Christmas 1917 away from the Front
Pat Atkins Posted 11 July , 2021 Share Posted 11 July , 2021 (edited) In the list posted 27 June 2021: 305287 Pte Oxby, S. 1st Notts & Derby, looks like Sam Oxby, who has British War and Victory medal rolls entry and index card available on Ancestry under his later number of 238031, 2nd Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Not sure where the 1st Bn Notts & Derby comes in, maybe administrative error: his medal rolls give previous overseas service with 1/8th N&D, originally with the number 1884; his 6-digit N&D service number fits the 1917 renumbering sequence beginning 305*** which was allocated to the 1/8th Bn. There is a Silver War Badge record which says he enlisted 7th February 1914 and was discharged sick on 27th August 1918 aged 21. PRC Posted 13 July , 2021 Share Posted 13 July , 2021 (edited) Isn't it traditional in the final episode of a long-running series for some of the cast members from earlier times to make a guest appearance So now you've done all the hard work I hoping I can turn up and carry it over the line ! Driver 112283 R. Thomas, A Battery, 59th Brigade, RFA. National Archive have a MiC for T/12823 Driver Robert Thomas, RFA. VM & BWM only, appears to have survived the war. No obvious surviving service records. Lance Corporal 41206 T Leather, 11th Manchesters. Surviving service record shows Thomas Leather previously 3rd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, (28917) then Manchester Regiment (41206) and then Labour Corps, (580026). Transferred to the 11th Battalion Manchesters on the 11th October 1916. Appointed acting unpaid Lance-Corporal 15th October 1917. Reverted to Private at an unspecified date due to Sickness. Transferred to the Labour Corps 4th May 1918. Extract from his B.103 shows:- (Image courtesy FindMyPast) The last entry on the previous page shows he was admitted to 35 Field Ambulance on the 19th December 1917 - NYD? - Syphilis. Reverted to Private at this stage. The CWGC webpage for Chocques Military Cemetery notes "Chocques was occupied by Commonwealth forces from the late autumn of 1914 to the end of the war. The village was at one time the headquarters of I Corps and from January 1915 to April 1918, No.1 Casualty Clearing Station was posted there." https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemeteries-memorials/cemetery-details/16500/chocques military cemetery/ Given the information on the B.103 for Thomas Leather, must be a strong likelihood that all the man taken on board 31 Ambulance Train at Chocques on this date came from 1 C.C.S. (BTW - the MiC for Thomas Leather is under his South Lancashire and Labour Corps service numbers). Hope that helps, and congratulations on a fantastic piece of work. PRC Posted 13 July , 2021 Share Posted 13 July , 2021 (edited) 42 minutes ago, David Porter said: 112823 Robert Thomas does have an MIC here and a surviving service record on Findmypast under that number So he does - and the MiC catalogued at the National Archive as T12823 appears to have exactly the same details and so appears to be a transcription error. Correction in the NA catalogue requested. And from his Casualty Form - Active Service (Image courtesy FindMyPast). Bardess Posted 13 July , 2021 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2021 Thanks, Peter and what a way to finish off this thread. Brilliant! Thanks also to David for correcting Dvr Thomas's S/N It's taken a while and now I'm incredibly pleased that it's all here and searchable. Hopefully researchers and rellies will Google and find this thread. There's no chance that I'm going to dip into the files again as I have quite a bit to catch up on, but, what a ride! Pat Atkins Posted 13 July , 2021 Share Posted 13 July , 2021 Congratulations, Bardess! A really worthy and (extensive) undertaking, great stuff. Pat PS I'll probably come back to these lists occasionally and add any details on the men in them I find. It's weirdly addictive...

PRC Posted 14 July , 2021 Share Posted 14 July , 2021 As @Pat Atkins says, strangely addictive. 265060 Private A Kirkman, 1/7th Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment. A search of nearby numbers brings up:- 265055 was previously 1390 N&D landed France 28/02/15 (MiC) 265056 was previously 1400 N&D landed France 28/02/15 (MiC) 265057 was previously 1407 7th N&D landed France 28/02/15 (MiC) 265061 was previously 1415 N&D landed France 28/02/15 (MiC) 265064 was previously 1428 N&D VM& BWM only (MiC) - currently incorrectly catalogued at the NA as 728, change requested. 265064 was previously 1430 N&D landed France 28/02/15 (MiC) According to the Long, Long Trail the 1/7th Battalion landed France on the 25th February 1915 – but that is actually the 1/5th Battalion – the entry for the 1/7th is shown as “same as 1/5th” https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-british-infantry-regiments-of-1914-1918/sherwood-foresters-nottinghamshire-derbyshire-regiment/ Four out of the six listed above also qualified for the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal. So given the earlier pre-1917 numbering it is likely that the T.F.E.M. card in the National Archive catalogue for Private 1414 A. Kirkman, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment relates to the same individual as the man aboard 31st Ambulance Train on the 21st December 1917. And that give you a Medal Index Card for a Private 143572 Aubrey Kirkman, Machine Gun Corps, who had previously served as Private 1414 Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment – his medals were issued by the MGC. Private Kirkman qualified for the 1914/15 Star as he first landed in France on the 28th February 1915. He appears to have survived the war. I couldn’t readily see any surviving service records on FindMyPast. Hope that helps, Peter
